Cards handle LP Spartans open strong at Oroville in season opener By JOSEPH SHUFELBERGER MediaNews Group Daily News photo by Andre Byik Corning's Chayce Maday, right, makes a move against Las Plumas High's Phillip Pittman Friday. By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer CORNING — Corning High's football team scored by committee in an impressive season opener Friday against the visiting Las Plumas Thunderbirds. The Cards (1-0 overall) dispatched the Thunderbirds (0-1 overall), 44-7, in a game that got away from Las Plumas early. Corning dispelled any doubts early that it would abandon its trademarked running game as Alex Avila pushed in a touchdown from a yard out, Thomas Lowe ran in a 7-yard touchdown and quarterback Chayce Maday rushed for a 1-yard touchdown of his own to give the Cards a 21-0 advantage after the first quarter. Corning coach John Studer said Friday's win speaks a lot to the team's offensive line. "We're pretty tough on those guys," Studer said. "We kind of let them know that … 'We're going to run the football, everybody knows we're going to run the football and you guys control whether or not we can do it.' So, we put a lot on their shoulders." Corning High's Aiden Nye, who rushed for 64 yards on eight carries, ran in a 34-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. Lowe tackled Las Plumas High's Jacob Hill in the end zone with 2:27 left in the half for a safety and the Cardinals took a 30-0 lead to the break. Corning junior Tony Carillo rushed for 62 yards on four carries, which included a 55-yard touchdown run with about 3:45 left in the third quarter. Tyelar Nelson added a touchdown of his own in the quarter, a 25-yard run to the end zone, to give the Cards a 44-0 heading to the fourth. Nelson finished with 28 yards rushing on the night. Las Plumas, stifled all night, got a break when quarterback Jess Little put together a nice drive early in the fourth, completing four passes on a possession that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown run by Ronnie Osby. Corning's Maday was able to take the quarter off. "We worked pretty hard overall as a team," Maday said. "We're obviously very deep in the backfield. We got four, six guys that can score anywhere on the field." Maday said that while the team's depth carried them on Friday, that's not to say there aren't things to improve upon. The senior quarterback said the team's blocking can use work, running backs should make their moves quicker, and "I think we could throw a little bit more." Maday had four passing attempts in the game. Studer said the team's always looking to get better, and when he shook hands with the coaching staff after the game, "We said, 'Hey, congratulations. Good win. We got a lot to work on.' Sometimes we have to step back and say, 'Hey, it is Week 1, everybody has a lot to work on.' I don't want to say we're perfectionists, but a lot of times we're looking for perfection." Corning next hosts Oroville at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The first half was that kind of night Friday for the hosts of Harrison Stadium. Two turnovers with less than a minute left in the second quarter led to a pair of Red Bluff touchdowns as the visiting Spartans beat Oroville 41-7 Friday night in both teams' season openers. Red Bluff's Christian Shaffer had a big night, scoring two touchdowns, one on offense with a 5-yard run and one on defense with a 31-yard fumble return in a 23-second span in the fourth quarter for the finishing touches. Trailing 26-0 at halftime, the Tigers righted themselves to a degree. Taner Dubie took an option pitch and scooted down the right sideline for a 24-yard touchdown run with 4:24 left in the period. "Before the game, I think most of us were nervous," Dubie said. "It was kind of hard to focus." Red Bluff took advantage in the waning moments of the first half. Safety Greg DuFour, who doubled as the Spartans' starting quarterback, picked off his counterpart, Oroville's Marcus Wilhite with 43 seconds left, setting up the Spartans at the Tigers' 32-yard line.. Three plays later, DuFour connected Red Bluff's Mike Stone (right) runs up the sideline against Oroville's Anthony Ramsey for a 27-yard gain during Friday's game in Oroville. with Jared Poore for a 5yard TD pass. Poore scored Red Bluff's first TD, a 21yard run with 8:36 left in the first quarter. His second score made it 20-0 in favor of the Spartans with 23 seconds left. But that was plenty of time for Red Bluff. After the kickoff, the Tigers chose to run a play with 16 seconds left instead of kneeling. That proved costly with a fumble that gave Red Bluff the ball at the Tigers' 30 with 11 seconds left. DuFour lofted a pass down the right sideline and Sean Freeny went up and was able to snatch the ball over the Oroville cornerback in the end zone. The Spartans even had 4 seconds to spare as they suddenly had a 26-0 halftime lead. "I've coached these kids for three straight years now," said Red Bluff coach Corey Hein, in his second year at the varsity level after serving as the junior varsity coach. "It makes it easy to call plays." Red Bluff made a planned switch at quarterback to Kade Lewis at the start of the second quarter. The backup was sharp, completing 3 of 4 passes for 48 yards including a touchdown pass for 25 yards to Austin Torres with 9:54 left in the second quarter. DuFour, the starter, finished with 73 yards passing as he completed 8 of 16 passes that included the two TDs and one interception by Oroville's Dylan Shoemaker with 7:51 left in the third quarter. The Tigers responded with a seven-play drive covering 74 yards that ended with Dubie's score. All seven plays were runs. "It was late in the third quarter, and I couldn't tell it was 26-7," Oroville coach Steve Steinmann said. "We came out and competed in the second half." The Tigers held the Spartans scoreless in the third period. But Red Bluff put things away further as Shaffer scored on a 5-yard TD run with 7:59 left in the game. Three plays later on defense, Shaffer scooped up an option pitch that hit the ground and he ran it in from 31 yards out 23 seconds later. Red Bluff's Mike Stone had 44 yards on eight carries. Poore had five catches for 31 yards, including the 5-yard TD. For Oroville, James Jones had 43 yards on nine carries.
