Goose shooting interrupts ’preach at the beach’ Mass HINGHAM, Mass. (AP) — The rector of a Hing- ham church said parishioners trying to hold a post- Mass picnic at the town’s beach were interrupted by a Canadian goose being shot in front of them. The Rev. Timothy Schenk of the St. John the Evan- gelist Episcopal church said that the church was hold- ing its ‘‘preach at the beach’’ Mass last week when parishioners saw two hunters open fire on a small flock of geese. He said one goose was shot and fell into the water, but did not die immediately. Schenk said parents and children at the picnic were upset about the shooting. He said the Mass was designed for children and to remind them that God isn’t just found at the pulpit and in the pews. VFW joins cross dispute MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE (AP) — Vet- erans groups are asking to intervene in the legal battle over a cross erected at a Mojave Desert fed- eral park to honor war dead. A nonprofit group filed a motion Tuesday in a federal court on behalf of the California department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a VFW post in Barstow. The motion will be heard next month. A decade-old legal battle continues over whether the cross in Mojave National Preserve is an uncon- stitutional religious symbol on public land. Can you hear me, are you listening? With so many voices bombard- ing the air waves in a variety of for- mats, where can someone go to find peace and quiet? Where is a place we can listen to "The Still Small Voice?" One that says, "Fear Not," "Take heed what you hear." Yet, how many negative reports did we hear today? I encourage us to think on those things that are kind, lovely, and of a good report. To do so will help on an emotional as well as a spiritual point of view. When we listen to negative things, we begin to think about them. If we are continually feeding our hearts and minds with bad news, the impact will be felt on a physical and emotional level. As a man thinks in his heart so is he. Anxiety concerning the affairs of the world has increased tremen- dously. It is important to remember there is some awesome Good news that needs to be spread also! When I am out and about I may say to others I am celebrating. It is funny that a majority of the time their faces lighten up and smiling ask "What are you celebrating?" I share I am celebrating life and I am thankful I woke up again this morn- ing. Surprised, they too acknowl- edge they are happy to be alive. My grandmother and several close friends passed away recently. At times like this, reflecting on life reminds me what a gift each day is. Lately I determined I will purpose- fully slow down and pay more attention to what is happening around me. For those whose path I cross I hope I can encourage them, listen to what they have to say, and if nothing else try to understand and share a smile. Part of my training requires that October is celebrated by many congregations as Pastor Appreciation Month. A committee of individ- uals from 12 local congre- gations is making plans to present a Pastor Apprecia- tion Dinner Saturday, Oct. 16, to honor the senior and associate pastors, and their spouses of the nearly 85 churches in Tehama Coun- ty. “I think this event will be the first of its kind", said I use observation skills. In doing so I realize many times people talk to each other and don’t really pay attention to what the other person is saying. For example: Today I met a few friends to have lunch. Walking into the restaurant the host said, "Hello, how are you today?" Before I could respond she turned, picked up menus and said, "Follow me." Not offended, I observed the moment. How many times does someone ask, "How are you", and they seem to be on auto pilot? They definitely aren’t lis- tening when you tell them you are ill and they reply "That’s nice!" Or, while out to dinner and the waitress asks, "How is everything?" You reply, "It is bad!" Smiling she says, "Thank you," as she walks away clueless. Maybe she is thinking about school, her boyfriend, or what is for dinner! Nevertheless, I don’t think she was listening. I wonder how many times I have been guilty of similar moments unknowingly. Understanding that everyone is different I find it refreshing to listen to others talk and share their stories. The key is to listen, for I learn much more when I am not talking. I real- ize that is true as it relates to listen- ing in every realm. As a therapist, we are trained to listen, as well as observe, yet how many times as humans do we want to interrupt while others are talking? Or, as in the example I used earlier, we may ask a question and never stop to lis- ten to the answer. Jay Nelson, a member New Hope Foursquare Church of Red Bluff. "I hope that each congregation will seek creative ways to honor their pastors, and demon- strate appreciation with a tangible way throughout the year. I am grateful to Director Kim Berry, and several volunteers of the Back to School project committee, who have offered their time and cre- ativity to make this hap- pen.” Brenda Ballentine GodTalk As I travel I have noticed there is a tremendous amount of people that are using cell phones. It is impor- tant in our culture to stay connected, to communicate with each other. Yet is any- one really listening to the most important message to be heard? Do those who know what that message is remember to share it with others? I truly believe we have entered into a famine in the land. Starvation is taking place all around us, yet how many can hear the cries of those who are hun- gry? Are we all too busy talking about what we want to say that we forget to talk about what we are suppose to be saying? Could it be the famine resulting in starvation is in reference to not hearing Good news? How many times have we heard others complaining that all they ever hear anymore is that every- thing is horrible and negative? We have an opportunity to change that. We can make a difference in the lives of those around us. What a great privilege it is to be able to see the beauty in a day, even when there are also challenges. I hope we will continue to remind each other that life is a blessing and that we have Good news to share with those who will listen, for truly we are all in this together. Brenda Ballentine is a psycho therapist interning for a license as a clinical social worker. She and her husband, Ed, founded and continue to lead the Northern California Burn Foundation. Pastor Appreciation Dinner The Pastor Apprecia- tion Dinner will not be a recruitment gathering for any coalition, ministry cause, or sales pitch semi- nar. It will simply be an opportunity for the minis- ters to relax, enjoy a won- derful full course meal, and fellowship with other pastors of Tehama Coun- ty. Invitations are being sent to about 85 churches, spanning Tehama County from Cottonwood, Manton, Tehama County Church Directory HOYT-COLE CHAPEL OF THE FLOWERS 816 Walnut St. - Red Bluff ABUNDANT LIFE FELLOWSHIP — 21080 Luther Rd. — Pastor J.E.
