Neither time was by the Cardinals and neither time was by turnover. The Wolves failed to score when the first half gun fired and when the final gun went off signaling the end of a 63-7 Shasta victory. It was a tough night for the Cardinals defense, who simply could not find a way to stop Shasta quarterback Clay Cavender and all of the weapons in his arsenal. In abbreviated duty Cavender rushed for 115 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries and threw for two more scores on a 6-for- 7 passing night. The game seemed to start in usual Corning style. Tyler McIntyre laid a big helmet-to-helmet hit on a Shasta defender as he con- verted a third down. The Cardinals drive eventually stalled, but a nice punt and a Shasta holding call backed the Wolves up to their own 3-yard line. Three plays later Shasta would be in the end zone. Shasta’s first score came on a 63-yard wide receiver reverse to Nate Stephens on a play where he blew by the Cardinal defense. After a Corning three- and-out Shasta marched down the field again and scored on a Tre Green 4- yard run. Corning fumbled the ensuing kickoff, which was recovered by the Wolves on the Cardinals 17-yard line. The Cardinals forced a fourth-and-goal situation at their own 6-yard line with practically their game on the line in the first quarter. But, Cavender evaded the Corning rush and found Stephens alone in the end zone to put Shasta up 20-0 by the end of the first quar- ter. Corning never recovered. Cavender added a 53- yard touchdown rush straight up the middle and a touchdown pass to Steve FOOTBALL Week 4 Scoreboard Today’s games Chico 48, Red Bluff 20 Shasta 63, Corning 7 Burney 46, Weed 0 Durham 34, Trinity 14 Foothill 43, Anderson 17 Lassen 49, Central Valley 0 Live Oak 28, Pierce 14 Marysville 27, Gridley 14 Maxwell 41, Fall River 8 Mazama 24, Enterprise 7 Orland 55, Las Plumas 9 Pleasant Valley 27, Oroville 3 Quincy 40, Hamilton 7 Wheatland 47, Lindhurst 21 Williams 21, Portola 14 Willows 42, Mt. McIntyre provided all but three of those yards for Corning. The second half wasn’t much better for Corning outside of a 79-yard touch- down run by John Lowe to prevent a shutout. By the time Lowe had scored Shasta had already added another Cavendar touchdown run, two from Ryan Montana and one from Joey Holcomb. Corning (3-1) travels to Oroville next week. Big plays cost Red Bluff against Panthers FOOTBALL Red Bluff 48 Chico 20 By NICK WILSON MediaNews Group CHICO — During this week’s practices, the prevailing question for the Chico High foot- ball team was whether junior quarterback Peter Wysong could step in as an effective signal- caller after sophomore sensation Trevon Reid went down with a sea- son-ending injury. Friday’s performance left no doubt. Jason Halley/Chico Enterprise-Record Chico’s Ger Lee is tackled by Red Bluff’s Ty Smith Friday night. Completing 13-of-19 passes for 193 yards and a pair of touchdowns, Wysong stepped into the starting role with quiet competence, leading the Panthers to a convincing 48-20 homecoming vic- tory over Red Bluff at University Stadium. Helping in that win- ning effort was senior running back Jamiel Hardman, whose ener- gy-level never faltered as he compiled 162 yards and three touch- downs. “Jamiel’s our man. He’s our third-year starter and he did an outstanding job,” Chico coach Jason Alvistur said. “Peter came in as the second-string quar- terback and the team rallied around him. I think he did an outstanding job. I’m really proud of him for stepping into that role and per- forming.” The first instance where Wysong proved himself came at the 7:15 mark of the opening quarter, when he con- nected with Jesse Holmes on a fade route for a 22-yard touch- down. Red Bluff answered on the ensuing series and punched in the team’s first score of the night on a one-yard burst from Gage Grabfelder, who capped off a 58-yard drive to put the score at 7-6 Chico. That’s when the Pan- thers turned to Hard- man. On seven of the fol- lowing nine plays, Hardman carried the ball before ultimately bowling in for a one- yard score to give Chico a 14-6 lead heading into halftime. After the break, Hardman picked up where he left off. Six minutes into the third quarter, Hardman found a gaping hole up the middle and bolted 22 yards through the Spar- tan secondary and ran over the one Red Bluff defender standing between him and the goal line for his second touchdown on the night. And though the Spar- tans stayed within one touchdown of the Pan- thers after a touchdown pass from Cody Case to See PLAYS, page 2C Lady Spartans knock off Corning, but lose to Lassen VOLLEYBALL Red Bluff Invitational By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor Tehama County rivals Red Bluff and Corning kicked off the 2010 Red Bluff Invitational, Friday, with the Spartans taking a two-game win 25-23, 25- 12. But the Lady Spartans couldn’t carry over the momentum from that win and their thrilling come- back, Thursday night against Enterprise. Red Bluff dropped its second pool game to Lassen 25-22, 25-20 on Day 1 of the tournament and ended up in second place in Pool 1. As close as the first game was the second game was equally a blow out. Errors haunted the Lady Cardinals early in Game 2, allowing Red Bluff to reel off an early 5-0 lead behind the service of Aubrey Lair. Corning only held onto their service for more than a single point twice during the game. The Cardinals might have been feeling the after- shock of losing a tightly contested Game 1 after a hard fought comeback. The game stayed within a two-point swing either way until Red Bluff earned four straight points to take a 16-11 lead. Corning had some tough breaks with the ceil- ing coming into play on a couple of points and Red Bluff kept expanding their lead to 22-15. But with a sideout Corning got the service and Hayley Cawkins made the most of it. Red Bluff couldn’t return four straight Cawkins’ serves and Corn- ing narrowed the gap to 22-20.
