Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Egg on my face, thanks in my mind Dear Readers, I have an apology to make in regard to last week’s col- umn. When I picked up last Satur- day’s paper I was in for a huge sur- prise. I nearly choked on the number of words containing not only spelling errors but wrong word use. I could hardly stand my own col- umn. I beg your forgiveness and promise not to accidentally send a non-edited column in again. It was my goof not the lack of editing by the Daily News. Did I get comments on last week’s column? You bet I did. The first comments came to me out of my own mouth, as I read Saturday’s local paper. The next was an e-mail letting me know how inept I had been with use of words and their spelling. I totally agree that my word errors were senseless even to myself. I apologize and promise to be more alert to what I am doing. Thank goodness there are forgiv- ing people in the community who were willing to continue to read the column and expressed their appreci- ation of the information concerning Mountain Lions. On a happy note, many thanks to Ron Clark and crew who worked unceasingly to clean up the down- town sidewalks of yuck and guck. What a pleasure not to walk and feel that one has to avoid stepping on the unsightly remnants of another per- son’s disposal of gum, food and other unidentified things. Thanks to our Red Bluff Daily News with all the wonderful pic- tures. The ones of people from days gone by and the currents ones are greatly appreciat- ed by the readers. Also worthy of mention are the articles regarding Tehama County Schools whose principals, teachers, parents and children are working diligently to increase the performance in our schools. The fact that twelve of our county schools have achieved an Academic Per- formance Index of 800 or higher shows the dedica- tion of Tehama County people who constantly strive toward helping all students learn and work toward being ready to attend college and develop careers. Four of our own great grandchildren attend one of the high performing schools, Richfield. As great grandparents we have been fortunate to have attended and observed some of the programs there at the school. Supervisors and Teachers alike are working to pre- sent materials and teach students into positive learning experiences. The parents of our great grandchil- dren checked out the learning growth of Tehama County schools before they moved both their busi- ness and their children to our coun- ty. They love their school and par- ticipate as volunteer helpers. Thank you to Larry Champion, Superintendent Tehama County Schools, and all the other dedicated principals, teachers, classroom assistants parents and stu- dents who make every effort toward bigger and better learning proficien- cy. Carolyn Barber In days gone by with the reference to school- rooms and school yards I came across a poem by Charlotte Perry. The poem is based on a little boy’s troubles in his ongoing learning. The following is an excerpt of the poem, "Little Boy’s Troubles" "…When one has begun, I see. My teacher says little by little, To the mountaintop we climb. It isn’t all done in a minute, But only a step at a time. She says that all the wise and learned men Has each to begin as I do. If that’s so—where’s my pen?" There are times when teachers say just the right words to make us think. The words are not critical, but understood as to the process of learning. Thanks again, to the teach- ers of Tehama County as they make every effort to encourage school learners of all ages. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hurcar@yahoo.com.
