The report does not give a cause of the crash, but does give a summary of witness accounts. "Witnesses reported seeing the weight-shift tricycle (trike) type airplane takeoff, make a very steep climb, roll to the right, and descend vertically to the ground," the report reads. "A post accident fire ensued and consumed the airplane. By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer The generosity and compassion shown every weekday afternoon inside the back of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship often goes unnoticed from those passing the church on the corner of Walnut and South Jackson. It doesn't go unnoticed by those inside the church's cafeteria. For 18 years the Lord's Table program has produced lunches for those in need. Typically around 50 people stop in for the free lunch, but numbers can range as high as 100. "Since the inception of the program, easily we've put a half-million plates over the counter," volunteer Larry Cowan said. Cowan spent 30 years as a chef in the restaurant business. He now donates his time producing meals in a much different way. Whereas he used to be able to plan a menu out, Cowan said the volunteers often determine what to make by what God has provided for them. In essence they scrounge, he jokes. Jerry Sigler, who runs operations at the Vineyard, said food for the program comes from a variety of sources from donations, a food bank of government surplus items out of Chico and more recently fresh vegetables grown at the Tehama County Probation Department's garden. Whatever they have, they make work. The tricky part is more knowing how many visitors they're going to have, Sigler said. Lee Vidaure, who helps run the program and has been a part of it since its second week, said the number of people who come for the free meal often increases as it gets Suicide prevention week starts Sunday By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer There's an average of 105 suicides per day in the United States. There's no statistics for how many failed suicide attempts there are, but suicide has become the 10th leading cause of death among Americans. That's one of the messages organizers of the 39th Annual National Suicide Prevention Week hope to spread Sept. 8-14. The other prevailing message is that 90 percent of those who die from suicide had a diagnosable and treatable mental disorder at the time of their death. Research has shown later in the month. Volunteers say they serve a widerange of people from children to senior citizens to the homeless and hitchhikers. No one is turned away, the only requirement is signing in when they show up. No sermons are given, just food — although someone is always available for counseling should a patron seek it. Sigler fondly recalls one young man who was able to right his life through his daily visits to the Lord's Table. The man one day asked if he could himself volunteer and began cleaning dishes. It led to the man beginning a career in the food service industry and he's now employed by a local restaurant. While many simply come for the See TABLE, page 7A Tehama County Sheriff Dave Hencratt announced his intention to run for reelection in 2014 through a released statement Friday morning. "I can say that being the Sheriff of Tehama County is a job I embrace every day," he wrote in the release. "I am very proud of the men and women who have chosen to serve within the Tehama County Sheriff's Office." Hencratt edged out 12year incumbent Clay Parker in 2010 by around 450 votes. A 25-year veteran with the Sheriff's Department, Hencratt spent time working in the jail, patrol, investigations and various drug units before becoming sheriff. In 2010 Hencratt campaigned on lowering the jail population by reintro- ducing inmate-work programs and putting administration personnel back on the streets. The first issue was challenged early in Hencratt's first term when the state's public safety realignment plan became law and pushed the jail to new population highs. In 2012 using AB-109 funding the Sheriff's Department opened a work-release auto shop. However a plan for a work-release farm has yet to materialize, bogged down by the lack of a public-approved site. Tehama County is in the midst of applying for a $20 million grant to expand the jail and relocate the Probation Department's Day Reporting Center. As for administration, Hencratt changed the undersheriff position to See TERM, page 7A Jr. Rodeo royalty crowned that men commit suicide at a rate 3.85 times more than women, but women attempt suicide three times as often. Suicides are highest among those aged 45-54, accounting for about 20 percent of all suicides. Adults over the age of 85 commit suicide at a rate close to 36 percent higher than all those who are younger than 85. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for those ages 25-34, only behind accidents. Firearms account for about one-half of all suicide deaths, although the most common method for women is poisoning. Caucasians have the highest rate of suicide per race in America, about 14 in every 100,000 people. Suicide rates are highest among the divorced, separated and widowed.
