2B – Daily News – Monday, September 20, 2010 RAIDERS Continued from page 1B ineffective Jason Campbell after halftime and led Oak- land to three scoring drives and a 16-14 victory over the St. Louis Rams in the home opener on Sunday. ‘‘They called my number and I just said I’m just going to do my thing, go out and have fun,’’ Gradkowski said. ‘‘We did that the second half. ... It was exciting to get a win. We’re just looking forward to moving on.’’ The question is whether it will be with Campbell or Gradkowski at quarterback. Coach Tom Cable said he hadn’t made any decisions about that just yet. But the fact that he made the switch just six quarters into the season after waiting a half-season to bench JaMarcus Russell showed how desperate Cable and the coaching staff was for a spark. ‘‘If things aren’t working out the way they want, obvi- ously they’re going to make moves and try to get that going,’’ cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said. ‘‘But that was definitely a big move, because they were trying to say we need to get some- thing started.’’ Gradkowski threw a 4- yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy, Darren McFadden ran for 145 yards on a career-high 30 carries and Sebastian Janikowski kicked three field goals to give Oakland (1-1) its first win in a home opener since 2004. Sam Bradford threw two touchdown passes to Mark Clayton but was unable to get the offense moving for much of the second half as the Rams (0-2) lost for the 27th time in 28 games. ‘‘In this football league, you have to play a full game,’’ Bradford said. ‘‘You can’t come out and play a half and expect to win. I felt like as an offense, we played good in the first half. You’d like to have more points than seven, but we got into a rhythm and I think every- thing was rolling smooth. Then we came out very flat in the second half.’’ Gradkowski breathed life into Oakland’s inept offense a year ago, leading the team to victories over Cincinnati and Pittsburgh before being sidelined by a knee injury. Gradkowski never got the chance to win the job this season as Oakland trad- ed for Campbell and made him the starter. Gradkowski tore a pectoral muscle in the offseason and injured his groin early in training camp. Campbell struggled in a 38-13 season-opening loss at Tennessee and was pulled at halftime of this game. Guillen hits grand slam in Giants’win SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jose Guillen stood in front of his locker and grinned. ‘‘I guess I’m officially a Giant now,’’ he said. ‘‘I finally did some- thing when it counted.’’ He sure did! Guillen hit a grand slam and drove in six runs, Barry Zito won for the first time in two months and the San Francisco Giants regained first place in the NL West with a 9-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. After a loss Saturday to fall behind San Diego in the West, the Giants moved a 1/2-game up on the Padres, who lost to St. Louis 4-1. ‘‘Nothing comes easy from this point on,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘You have to be smart, go hard and do whatever it takes to win games.’’ Zito (9-13) pitched six solid innings to end a career-worst nine- game losing streak and record a vic- tory for the first time since July 16. He gave up two runs and three hits, walking one and striking out three. ‘‘The last couple of starts the team lost but personally I felt better than I have previously,’’ Zito said. ‘‘I was building off those. After the four-spot it’s up to me and not take anything for granted.’’ Ryan Braun hit a two-run homer for the Brewers, who were officially eliminated from the NL Central divi- sion race. Braun also robbed Cody Ross of a home run in the first inning, reaching over the fence to pull back his drive. ‘‘It was right down the line,’’ Braun said. ‘‘I didn’t think I had a chance at it. I was pretty excited to come back with it. It was well over the fence.’’ Pat Burrell hit a three-run homer in the seventh and Guillen added a two-run single in the fifth. ‘‘The main thing was finding my consistency,’’ Guillen said. ‘‘The last few days I’ve been able to find it. Everything is clicking at the right time.’’ Guillen’s first-inning grand slam off Chris Narveson (11-8) was the fifth of his career and first since June 2008. ‘‘Braun was one of the best catch- es I’ve seen,’’ Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ‘‘That could have been disheartening. You appreciate the catch but I was disappointed because that was a run. That’s not a great way to start a game after two tough losses and we’ve been having trouble scor- ing runs. Guillen gave us a lift right away.’’ Ross led off the game with a drive to left that Braun caught above the wall. Freddy Sanchez then singled, Aubrey Huff flew out, Buster Posey doubled and Burrell walked ahead of Guillen. Zito, meanwhile, breezed through 5 2-3 innings, retiring 16 of 18 before giving up Corey Hart’s single and Braun’s 23rd home run of the season. ‘‘It seems like his arm angle was a little bit different,’’ Braun said. ‘‘He had more movement on all his pitch- es and late life on everything. He’s throwing the ball better than his record would indicate.’’ Ellis homers as A’s top Twins 6-2 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Mark Ellis had three hits, including a two-run homer, and 30-year-old rookie Bobby Cramer won his second consecutive start, help- ing the Oakland Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 6- 2 on Sunday. The AL Central-leading Twins lost reigning AL MVP Joe Mauer to a balky left knee late in the game. It wasn’t immediately clear how Mauer was hurt; he was replaced defensively by Jose Morales in the sev- enth inning.
