QUICK FACTS Head coach: Claudio Martinez 2009 record: 1-10-1 Top returners: Kyle Davis, Skylar Garcia, Daniel Gonzalez, Carlos Mendoza, Cody Yarbrough If there was going to be a year the Red Bluff Spartans became a factor in the Eastern Athletic League this may be it. Red Bluff brings back a roster loaded with seniors, including: Ryann Almeida, Enrique Ascencio, Kyle Davis, Skylar Garcia, David Gonzalez, Mario Gonzalez, Cullen Groom, Fredy Herrera, Martin Hlinka, Carlos Mendoza, Richard Penne, Eddie Quezada, Rogelio Velaquez and Cody Yarbrough. The senior class may not have had much success in its first three years, but that’s something they want to change with their last opportunity. OUTLOOK “Losing sucks,” forward Skylar Garcia said. “”It motivates you.” The Spartans started condition- ing training in July and are using a team first approach entering this year. That’s welcomed by returning goalie Carlos Mendoza, who said communication is one of the keys San Francisco 49ers SANTA CLARA (AP) — San Francisco offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye stood up Thursday and took responsibility for the prob- lems the 49ers had getting plays in on time in their lop- sided season-opening loss at Seattle. He defended himself, too, and insists things can be fixed before Monday night’s game against the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. Raye spent nearly 20 minutes Thursday address- ing San Francisco’s offense — and coach Mike Single- tary sat on the ground five feet away to hear it, and surely lend his support. He later stretched himself out to get comfortable. ‘‘It’s my responsibility. I bear all the responsibility for the way we operate on offense,’’ Raye said on the heels of the embarrassing 31-6 defeat to the Sea- hawks. ‘‘I’m the leader. It’s my watch. I have the responsibility for the things that occur where it concerns the offense.’’ Raye’s media availabili- ty was moved up by a day so he could publicly discuss the offensive matters. Several times quarter- back Alex Smith didn’t get the entire play in his ear before his headset cut off with 15 seconds left on the Coach Claudio Martinez said Mendoza has become a real strong goalkeeper. Supporting him will be defend- ers Kyle Davis, Cullen Groom, Enrique Ascencio and Cody Yarbrough, who has moved back to defense. The midfield hopes to keep pos- session more this season than they have in the past with lots of touch- es and passes. Daniel Gonza- lez led the team in goals last season and Connor Ross is being moved up top. Both will work with Garcia. Martinez said he will rotate his strikers more this season in an effort to keep them fresh. The overall key for the season goes back to team work. “The key is passing as a team and communication,” Martinez said. “They have the skills. They know how to play. We just have to do everything as a team.” Martinez, who has coached the seniors for all four years, said they are as academic and a good group of kids as he’s had. Smith now has a wrist- band with plays on it and that is one thing under con- sideration to help alleviate the issues, which led to three burned timeouts and Smith being forced to improvise at last second.
