2B – Daily News – Thursday, September 16, 2010 Raiders run defense faces another big test Oakland Raiders ALAMEDA (AP) — Linebacker Kamerion Wim- bley insists problems the Oakland Raiders had stop- ping the run last week against the Tennessee Titans are correctable. They better be. With Steven Jackson and St. Louis coming to town for Oakland’s home opener, the Raiders won’t get much of a break as they try to avoid an 0-2 start for the fourth time in six seasons. ‘‘We just had a couple breakdowns here and there,’’ Wimbley said Wednesday. ‘‘I don’t think it was anything with the scheme or the play-calling. We just had a couple mental breakdowns that gave them some big plays that allowed them to get that high on us.’’ The most significant breakdown came late in the second quarter when Ten- nessee scored two touch- downs in a span of 1 minute, 53 seconds. Titans running back Chris Johnson provid- ed the big blow with a 76- yard touchdown run after being shut down for most of the first half. That helped turn what had been a promising start to the season for Oakland’s run defense into a nightmarish afternoon that ended with Tennessee handing the Raiders a 35-13 loss. It was the eighth straight season- opening loss for Al Davis’ team. ‘‘We played well on Johnson for most of the game and he had that one big run that helped his aver- age out,’’ Wimbley said. ‘‘Facing Jackson, he’s not necessarily as fast as John- son is but he still has a lot of stuff that you have to be aware of and be careful about.’’ Wimbley was part of Oakland’s offseason defen- sive makeover. The veteran linebacker was acquired from Cleveland in March in exchange for a third-round draft pick and broke into the Raiders’ lineup early in training camp. Oakland also signed free agent defensive tackle John Henderson and used their first two picks in the draft on middle linebacker Rolando McClain and defensive end Lamarr Houston. It all looked good on paper until Johnson’s big run, which brought to mind memories of 2009 when the Raiders ranked 29th against the run and 26th on defense overall. Safety Tyvon Branch whiffed on a tackle attempt near the line of scrimmage while lineback- ers Rolando McClain and Thomas Howard were sealed off perfectly, opening a huge lane for Johnson to burst through. Oakland’s players and coaching staff said the mis- takes were self-inflicted. ‘‘We needed to finish a little better,’’ Wimbley said. ‘‘Once the score kind of got out of whack, I think we stepped it up a little bit, try- ing to bring it back close MCT file photo The Rams and Steven Jackson (above) battle the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. before the game was over, but by then it was already too late.’’ Before Johnson’s long touchdown, which boosted his per-carry average from 2.54 to 5.3, Oakland’s defense had shut down the NFL’s leading rusher from 2009. Raiders coach Tom Cable, though, isn’t interest- ed in moral victories. ‘‘See, this is the mode we have got to get out of around here,’’ Cable said. ‘‘That’s not good enough. We have got to stay to this level, to this vision that we have. A standard of play if you will, and don’t compromise it.’’ Oakland’s offense got a boost when running back Michael Bush returned to practicing at full capacity. Bush sat out the season- opener after breaking the thumb on his left hand but worked out without limita- tions Wednesday. His play- ing status will be determined later in the week. NOTES:T Erik Pears, who was with the team in training camp, has been re- signed. To make room on the roster, wide receiver/kick returner Yamon Figurs was released. Figurs started on special teams against the Titans and fumbled the opening kickoff, but Cable insisted that wasn’t why the move was made. ... LG Robert Gallery did not practice because of a hamstring strain. His status is questionable. ... CB Nnamdi Asomugha (groin), WR Chaz Schilens (knee), defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring), safety Hiram Eugene (hamstring), cornerbacks Chris Johnson (stinger) and Walter McFadden (hamstring) and linebacker Travis Goethel (back) were also held out of practice. Betemit leads Royals over Athletics Athletics 3 Kansas City 6 KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Wilson Betemit hit his first career grand slam and Bruce Chen picked up his 10th victory as the Kansas City Royals beat the Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Wednesday night. Betemit, who homered and drove in four runs Tues- day, worked a full count from Trevor Cahill and fouled off the next three pitches before homering just inside the right-field pole in the third inning. Mitch Maier doubled, Jarrod Dyson had an infield single and Billy Butler walked before Betemit’s 12th home run that snapped Cahill’s 15-inning scoreless streak. Chen (10-7), who was 1- 13 from 2007-09, gave up three runs in the first two innings. He went five innings, allowing three runs, six hits and a walk. Chen, who started the year in the minors, leads the Royals in victories. Mark Ellis and Kurt Suzuki had run-scoring sin- gles in the A’s first. Matt Carson homered in the sec- ond on the first pitch from Chen, giving the A’s a 3-0 lead. Joakim Soria worked the ninth for his 38th save in 40 opportunities and he has converted 31 consecutive saves. Cahill (16-7), who was 7-2 with a 1.69 ERA in his previous nine starts, allowed six runs, six hits and three walks in five innings. While Cahill has limited right-handed hitters to a .184 batting average, the lowest in the majors, he has yielded 11 home runs to right-hand- ed batters. Butler, one of three right-handed hitters in the Kansas City lineup, homered in the fifth with Mike Aviles aboard. The second-place A’s dropped 10 games behind the Texas Rangers, who beat Detroit 11-7, in the AL West. They are a game below .500 (72-73). Chris Carter went 0 for 4 and is hitless in 24 at-bats to begin his major league career. The A’s record to start a career is 0 for 25 by Bill McNulty in 1972. Notes: Rain delayed the start of the game for 1 hour. A’s 1B Daric Barton walked in the third, his major league-leading 101st. Tulo’s homers powers Rox over Padres DENVER (AP) — Troy Tulowitzki is on such a Sep- tember surge, he’ll surely hate to see the calendar flip — unless the Colorado Rockies are still playing deep into October. And if he stays this hot, they just might. Tulowitzki had his third multihomer game in a little more than a week and tied a career high with seven RBIs to help the Rockies beat the NL West-leading Padres 9-6 Wednesday and avoid a series sweep. The smooth-fielding shortstop’s 11 homers in September are just one shy of tying the franchise mark for any month — and he still has half a month left to go. ‘‘The game’s not that easy. I’m just hot right now,’’ Tulowitzki said. ‘‘I’m continually trying to remind myself to enjoy this while it last. It’s not going to last for- ever.’’ The Padres began the day with a 1 1/2-game division lead over the second-place San Francisco Giants, who hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday night. Powered by Tulowitzki and Jorge De La Rosa, who gave Colorado’s belea- guered bullpen a break by pitching into the eighth, the Rockies climbed within 2 1/2 games of San Diego. They also closed within 2 1/2 games of Atlanta in the wild-card race. As locked in as Tulowitz- ki has been lately, Rockies manager Jim Tracy figured he would lead the team out of its two-game mini-funk. ‘‘This is as competitive of player as I’ve ever seen,’’ Tracy said. ‘‘You could tell from that first at-bat that he wasn’t going to let us lose.’’ Adrian Gonzalez nearly matched Tulowitzki’s offen- sive production. The first baseman hit two homers to run his season total to 29, including a three-run shot in the eighth that wiped out half of a 9-3 deficit. He fin- ished with five RBIs. De La Rosa (8-4) yielded five runs and six hits in 7 1- 3 innings. Colorado starters have been awful of late, overtax- ing the bullpen. That cost them dearly Tuesday night when Edgmer Escalona’s failure to cover first base on a grounder to Todd Helton in the ninth inning led to the decisive run in a 7-6 loss. ‘‘He stepped up and gave us exactly what we needed,’’ Tracy said of De La Rosa. Colorado won the final game of a three-game series — not exactly what the team had in mind when the slumping Padres arrived at Coors Field on Monday. The Rockies were riding a 10-game winning streak and had designs on overtaking the Padres. ‘‘It goes without saying — we needed that game. We simply need that game,’’ Tracy said. NL MVP candidate Car- los Gonzalez finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs, increasing his NL leads in batting aver- age (.341) and RBIs (106). Tulowitzki is making a late MVP push, as well, despite missing 33 games with a broken wrist. He went 3 for 5 to raise his aver- age to .325, second to Carlos Gonzalez. ‘‘Between him and Car- los Gonzalez it’s hard to find a couple of guys that are hit- ting the ball as well as they JR. In the eighth inning, the Padres had to pick their poi- son and elected to walk Car- los Gonzalez with a runner on second and face Tulow- itzki. The strategy worked when Ernesto Frieri retired Tulowitzki on a hard lineout to left. Pitch to a player with seven RBIs, though? ‘‘Pretty crazy,’’ Carlos Gonzalez said, grinning. ‘‘I’m not sure about that one.’’ Tulowitzki understood the rationale — a right-han- der coming in to face a righty. It wasn’t an insult. JR. ROUNDUP All-Around winner: Linda Johnson, Ft.
