Kay Rohde, ministry development coordinator for the Northern California Episcopal Diocese, will preach and preside at Sunday worship at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 1. Appointed by The Rt. Rev. Barry Beisner, bishop of the Northern California Episcopal Diocese, Rodhe serves as the Ministry Development Coordinator for the diocese. This position was created to provide support for congregations with a non-traditional model for leadership. Rohde will also be working with Canon to the Ordinary Britt Olson, the Commission on Ministry, and other diocesan groups in helping congregations discern and develop effective ministry models. A native of Northern California, Rohde grew up in Eureka, in which her religious upbringing included active attendance at Christ Church Episcopal Church in Eureka, as well as youth participation at Camp Noel Porter on Lake Tahoe, and at St. Dorothy's Rest Episcopal Retreat Center at Camp Meeker, California. A graduate of Cal Poly State University, Pomona, Rohde earned a degree in Recreation Administration, pursuing her goal of becoming a park ranger. During her 30 year career, she worked at national recreational areas at Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico; Jewel Cave, South Dakota; Rocky Mountain, Colorado; Everglades, Florida; North Shenan- doah, Virginia; Wind Cave, South Dakota; and Lake Mead, Nevada. Primarily engaged as an Interpretive Ranger, Rohde helped visitors to understand the stories and values inherent in park resources and to better appreciate, love and encourage the desire to care for protected places. Throughout her career, Rohde maintained activity in the Episcopal Church. She entered the ordination process and was ordained a priest in 1993. Her work as a Park Ranger, a mother and a priest were woven together; each providing the faith and support for the others. She served as a priest in the Diocese of Nevada for 14 years. Upon her retirement in 2007, she relocated to Casper, Wyoming, pursuing a fulltime ministry in the Diocese of Wyoming as a special project coordinator. She accepted the position of interim rector and St. Mark's in Casper, Wyoming, and at the conclusion of that ministry, became a ministry developer for three congregations. She worked to develop mission and ministry opportunities in congregations all over the diocese. During her time as interim rector in Casper, Wyoming, she become involved with youth on a diocesan level by planning and implementing diocesan youth events and camp planning. Rohde was also a member of diocesan committees including Commission on Ministry, Diocesan Council, Diocesan Camp boards and Deputy to General Convention three times. In describing her ministry, Rohde says, "I am passionate about mission, passionate about caring for all of God's Creation, passionate about growing in my relationship to my God through working with others to be the people of God in a changing world. That is who I am - I am Kay Rohde, a mother, a priest and a retired park ranger." St. Peter's Episcopal Church is at 510 Jefferson Street, on the corner of Jefferson and Elm streets.
