Before branding that statement as hyperbole, let's look at precedent. A century ago, electricity was a luxury. Now, can we image living without it? Indoor plumbing did not become standard until four score years ago. Anyone want an outhouse in his backyard? There are people — not very old people either — who are reading this who remember when getting a phone was a big thing. Technologies evolve. Like it or not, we become dependent. I reside on the web; communicating with vendors, providing services to clients, even looking up restaurants for our anniversary. (Be warned however, I do not play Farmville; your invitation shall be rebuffed.) The triple-W is about as important to my livelihood as PG&E is to delivering the juice that runs my computer. I could survive without it, sure, but it would — by no small amount — upend the quality of my life. So I should have foreseen the turn of events that would transpire when I decided to "upgrade" my phone service. But, what can I say? I'm an optimist. Dreams die hard… The crew that came out was friendly and efficient. Yet, within 24 hours, my internet service devolved into hit-and-miss connections; so much so that I could no longer hold phone conversations nor work on the web. Not having only one contact in the loop, I call the phone provider; explaining the issue (over a series of clicks and clacks). They flip monitors are moniting. Marcus City manager speaks to Corning club Corning City Manager John Brewer was the guest speaker for the August meeting of the Corning Exchange Club. John is a native of the area and was raised on a cattle ranch north of Los Molinos. He attended Lassen View Elementary School, and is a graduate of the Red Bluff High School (something that we Cardinals will have to give him a pass on). John also attended the Department of Defense Mapping School, Central Texas College and Shasta College. John and his wife Cindee have four grown children and five grandchildren. They live north of Red Bluff, and during John's limited spare time they enjoy traveling, kayaking, golfing, history and maps. Public Works Director Patrick Walker (a home town boy - recently returning to Corning as our Public Works Director) accompanied Brewer to the meeting so he could be introduced and get acquainted with Exchange Club members. John presented a power point presentation show and a detailed explanation Courtesy photo Pictured, from left, are Patrick Martin, Corning Public Works Director; John Brewer, Corning City Manager; Bucky Bowen, Corning Exchange Speaker's Chairman. on all the projects currently underway in the city. Club members were impressed with the updates on the city's financial condition, and the ongoing construction of the Corning Community Park, Rodger's Theater Rehabilitation project, and the upcoming Solano Street repaving project. Community Clip? Three Exchange Club members, who also serve on the board of the Skate & Bike Association were particularly interested in hearing about the skate and bike park portion of the park; and expressed their pleasure in once again hearing that Corning's skate and bike park will be the finest such facility in northern California. President Dean Cofer thanked John and Patrick for giving up an evening to attend and give us the State of the City report, and pointed out that it is refreshing that we finally have a city manager who talks to his constituents instead of talking down to Anniversary — Vilche e-mail: clerk@redbluffdailynews.com SPECIAL PAGES ON THE FOLLOWING DAYS Tuesdays: Wednesdays: Business Thursdays: Entertainment Fridays: Education Saturdays: Farm, Religion, TV Publisher & Advertising Director: Greg Stevens gstevens@redbluffdailynews.com Editor: Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com Sports Editor: Andre Byik sports@redbluffdailynews.com Making the right connections Circulation Manager: Kathy Hogan khogan@redbluffdailynews.com Production Manager: Sandy Valdivia sandy@redbluffdailynews.com POSTMASTER SEND ADDRESS CHANGES TO: PO BOX 220, RED BLUFF CA 96080 The Red Bluff Daily News is an adjudicated daily newspaper of general circulation, County of Tehama, Superior Court Decree 9670, May 25, 1955 © 2013 Daily News Postage Paid Periodicals 90 years ago...
