FIELD HOCKEY in its home opener. Lassen 1 Corning 0 By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING—Despite a strong push in the second half, the Lady Car- dinals couldn’t find the back of the cage, Wednesday, allowing a lone first-half goal by the visiting Lassen Grizzlies to hold up in a 1-0 defeat. Corning had its fair share of chances, including 11 penalty corners, but couldn’t deliver a finishing touch Lassen scored in the waning min- utes of the first half when a Grizzlies shot rebounded wide of the cage. Corning couldn’t clear the ball out of the danger zone and the Grizzlies knocked it home for the game’s only score. Corning coach Teresa Lamb said her team’s play was improved from the League Jamboree, in which they finished 1-5-1. She praised the Lady Cardinals defense, especially goalies Bethany Vader and Katlyn Huntley for their work clearing balls wide. Silivia Diaz also played well, bring- ing the ball up field and playing it through. Karlie Jennings was aggressive in midfield, following and tracking balls. Forward Anna Nelson had a strong game with her stick work. Lamb said the best way for the Lady Cardinals to learn how to finish their scoring opportunities is through more simulated game-action in prac- tice. She said their road trip over the weekend to the Willow Glenn Jam- boree will help that experience. As for Lassen, the Cardinals will face them again on Oct. 4. “We’ll beat them next time,” Lamb said.
