4A – Daily News – Thursday, September 9, 2010 Pastimes Gateway Science Museum to launch new fall exhibits Gateway Science Museum will launch its fall 2010 exhibits, “A Forest Journey” and “Nature’s Numbers,” with a weekend of museum events starting Friday, Sept. 10, when it reopens with its fall and winter hours. A the exhibits will help visitors explore the world of trees and math in nature. A Forest Journey features interactive exhibits exploring how people, animals and trees all depend on each other for survival. Visitors will discover the four types of forests found on our planet, uncover how trees are used in products we use every day and learn about the types of medicine derived from different species of trees. “Our fall exhibits are going to bring an exciting set of activities for kids of all ages to discover at the Gate- way Science Museum,” said Acting Executive Director Rachel Teasdale. Nature's Numbers gives visitors firsthand experi- ence investigating the presence of math in nature. The pattern of spots on a dog, the delicate symmetry of but- terfly wings and the ruggedness of a coastline all involve math. This playful, hands-on exhibit lets visi- tors discover geometry in snowflakes, explore loga- rithmic spirals in seashells and touch textured patterns, which demonstrates that math can be felt and not just seen. Another exhibit the museum will be debuting is A.O. Carpenter, photographer of the Mendocino Fron- tier. This exhibit provides stunning images from the late 1800s that chronicle the logging, shipping and agricultural industries of Mendocino County. Weekend events commence with a members-only preview Friday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon fol- lowed by the opening to the general public at noon. Saturday events include activities for kids in the Edu- cation Station, photo opportunities and more. Sunday is Grandparents Day, and there will be special hands- on activities available to grandparents and grandkids. A Forest Journey and Nature's Numbers are exhibi- tions developed and produced by The Franklin Insti- tute. The A.O. Carpenter: Photographer of the Mendo- cino Frontier exhibition was organized by the Grace Hudson Museum, City of Ukiah, California, in associ- ation with the California Exhibition Resources Alliance. Gateway Science Museum will be open Sept. 10 to Jan. 23, Wednesday – Friday, noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The museum is located at 625 Esplanade. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children and free for museum members. For more information, please visit www.gatewayscience.org. This year Chico will play host to the only jet demonstration team coming to Northern Cal- ifornia, with a perfor- mance by the Canadian Forces Snowbirds. This performance marks the 40th anniver- sary of the Canadian Forces Snowbirds tak- ing to the skies. This jet demonstra- tion team is returning to Chico after a highly successful performance here in 2008. Celebrating "women in aviation" this year is especially exciting because the Snowbirds Lieutenant Colonel Maryse Carmichael is the female officer lead- ing the jet team. The show will be welcoming the youngest female performer on the United State's Unlimit- ed Aerobatic Team, Melissa Pemberton, who takes to the sky performing daring maneuvers that you would have to see to believe. She is 26. Tickets are available at Northern California National Bank, Raley's, the Chico Air Museum and the Chico Chamber of Commerce or at www.chicoairshow.org.
