Game of the Day Girls Tennis: University Prep at Corning, 3:30 p.m. The Lady Cardinals open up Northern Athletic League play. Quick hits 1B Sports Tuesday August 27, 2013 Athletics hold on, beat Tigers 49ers trade LB Haralson to Saints SANTA CLARA (AP) — A person with knowledge of the trade says the San Francisco 49ers have sent linebacker Parys Haralson to the New Orleans Saints, who are in desperate need at the position as a pair of would-be starters are sidelined with knee injuries. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday night because neither team had announced the trade. It wasn't clear what compensation the 49ers would receive in return. Haralson departed San Francisco team headquarters Monday night after saying his goodbyes before the team began a late practice, acknowledging that he had been traded while providing no further details other than, ''I'm outta here.'' Saints outside linebacker Will Smith will be sidelined for the season with a knee injury, a person familiar with the situation said. Victor Butler also is recovering from knee surgery that will sideline him most or all of the season. The Mercury News first reported the trade was with New Orleans. Athletics put Reddick on DL; designate Neshek DETROIT (AP) — The Oakland Athletics placed right fielder Josh Reddick on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a sprained right wrist. He injured the wrist on Sunday and was hitting .213 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs in 97 games. Oakland selected first baseman Daric Barton from TripleA Sacramento to take Reddick's place on the roster. Brandon Moss will start in right field in Monday night's game against the Detroit Tigers and Barton will start at first base. The Athletics also designated right-handed relief pitcher Pat Neshek for assignment on Monday. He was 2-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 41 games. Right-handed pitcher Evan Scribner was recalled from Sacramento to take Neshek's roster spot. Mets ace Harvey has torn ligament in elbow NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey has a partially torn ligament in his right elbow, an injury the New York Mets' young ace hopes will not require surgery. Harvey and General manager Sandy Alderson both say they we're shocked when they were given the results of the MRI performed Monday. The right-hander said he was dealing with forearm discomfort for some time this season and that it got worse after his start Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. The NL All-Star game starter has some swelling in the arm and a more complete prognosis will not be made for a week or two. For now, the Cy Young Award candidate will rest. Harvey says he will do everything he can to avoid Tommy John surgery that would likely force him to miss an entire season. High school coach suspended for slapping player's helmet WESTON, Fla. (AP) — The coach of a prominent South Florida high school football team has been suspended from athletic events for two weeks after slapping one of his players in the side of the helmet in a nationally televised game. Broward County school officials say Mark Guandolo of Cypress Bay High will also serve a three-day suspension from his job. Guandolo struck quarterback Lucas Tellefsen in the left side of the helmet after an incompletion during Cypress Bay's loss to American Heritage on Sunday. The game was shown on ESPN. Guandolo has 240 victories and two state championships in a quarter-century of coaching in South Florida. His team lost in the Florida Class 8A title game last season. 1st-round Slam win for Venus Williams matters now NEW YORK (AP) — Venus Williams had been 14-0 in the first round of the U.S. Open, though she never had to face an opponent ranked in the top 30 at that stage. Williams was usually the seeded player, but after two years of illness and injury, the seven-time major champ was the one pulling the upset Monday when she defeated Wimbledon semifinalist Kirsten Flipkens. Her ranking down to No. 60, Williams beat the 12thseeded Flipkens 6-1, 6-2 for one of her biggest wins since she pulled out of this tournament two years ago because of Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disease. AP photo Jed Lowrie congratulates Albert Callaspo after scoring a run in the sixth inning Monday. DETROIT (AP) — Coco Crisp and Daric Barton each drove in two runs, and the Oakland Athletics beat Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers 8-6 on Monday night. Cabrera hit his 43rd homer, bolstering his pursuit of another Triple Crown, but Barton had a tiebreaking RBI single in Oakland's two-run sixth inning. Crisp also had a solo homer during his three-hit performance. A.J. Barton, who was called up from Triple-A Sacramento earlier in the day, had the last of three consecutive singles to open the inning, driving in Nate Freiman. Crisp added an RBI single. Alberto Callaspo added a run-scoring single against Al Alburquerque in the seventh and Jed Lowrie's RBI double in the eighth made it 8-4. Hunter looks strong in return to field SANTA CLARA (AP) — All week long, Kendall Hunter peppered fellow San Francisco running back Anthony Dixon about how he looked in practice — how fast did he look? No more questions necessary after the burst Hunter showed Sunday night, a darting 15-yard gain during the 49ers' third series of the first quarter that resulted in a 5-yard touchdown pass from Colin Kaepernick to Quinton Patton on the way to a 34-14 preseason win against Minnesota. ''He's looking quick. He was showing that burst up in the hole during the week and he was coming back to me, 'How I look, how I look, do I look fast?''' Dixon said. ''I said, 'Yeah, bro, you got it, baby, you're good, I can't wait to see you go.' We all rally around each other and play (for) each other. That was what he was asking me all week. I saw it and I was expecting him to have a good game.'' Indeed, Hunter is looking plenty swift — not to mention fresh — after working tirelessly to return following surgery on a torn left Achilles tendon that ended his season in late November last year. Does Hunter feel quicker on his feet after spending more than half a year rehabilitating and waiting? ''We'll just see,'' he said with a smile. ''A lot of guys came to me saying, 'You look faster.' I think they haven't seen me in a while.'' It was hard enough not to be on the field with the NFC champions, and even more difficult to miss playing in the Super Bowl. The right-hander was 0-2 with a 3.47 ERA in his previous four starts. Omar Infante and Victor Martinez also homered for the AL Central-leading Tigers, who had won three in a row. Martinez went 4 for 5 and Torii Hunter had two hits. Cabrera went deep in the fifth, sending a 3-1 pitch from Griffin over the wall in right for a two-run shot that tied it at 4. He leads the AL with a .359 batting average and 130 RBIs, but he AP photo Kendall Hunter carries the ball Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings. practice activity on Aug. 10, Hunter had three carries for 13 yards in his first preseason appearance against the Vikings — yet just being part of 13 snaps at Candlestick Park meant more than the results for Frank Gore's likely backup. ''It felt good just to be back out there,'' Hunter said. ''I feel real good, just to be back out there and able to play again. Everything's starting to come back. I've got to give it up to the offensive linemen. They made a hole for me and let me get that 15.'' Hunter, a fourth-round draft pick in 2011 out of Oklahoma State who turns 25 next month, had 72 carries for 371 yards and two touchdowns last season in an increased role as the team's second-leading rusher behind Gore. Then, all of the momentum he had gained was halted when he got hurt at New Orleans on Nov. 25. In spite of the injury and missing the final five regu- lar-season games, he still wound up ranked third on the team in yards rushing and sixth in the NFL with a 5.2-yards-per-carry average before going on season-ending injured reserve. The 5-foot-7, 199-pound Hunter tried to remain upbeat, and having a jokester such as Dixon around certainly didn't hurt. Dixon had no doubts Hunter would return to his top form — and, now, they both want to keep a good thing going right into the Sept. 8 season opener at home against Green Bay. It will be a rematch of the NFC division playoffs last January at Candlestick Park. Dixon rooted for a big run by Hunter in his preseason debut. ''We were talking about it before it happened,'' Dixon said. ''I said, 'The only thing you've got to do is just get that first lick and you're going to be good.' I guess once he got it, he was good.'' Coach Jim Harbaugh noted how Hunter's teammates are talking up his speed and how he might be faster than before he got hurt. ''He looked like it, yeah,'' Harbaugh said. ''He's looked like it in practice as well. A lot of the fellas have been talking about how he seems faster. So, I can't say that I disagree with that.'' Notes: Quarterback Scott Tolzien was among five players waived Monday, a day after Harbaugh announced Colt McCoy had earned the job as Kaepernick's backup. With Tolzien out of the mix, newly signed veteran Seneca Wallace and rookie B.J. Daniels are left competing to be the third QB. ... The other departed players are RB D.J. Harper, LB Joe Holland, G Al Netter and P Colton Schmidt. The moves left San Francisco's roster at 85 players, with 10 more cuts to make by Tuesday afternoon's deadline. PREP ROUNDUP Field Hockey Preseason Jamboree The Corning Lady Cardinals went 3-2-2 over the weekend at the annual preseason jamboree. Corning beat River View 3-0 behind a pair of goals from Mandy Lomeli. Maria Diaz scored the other goal and had an assist. Kobey Rezendes and Maricruz O'Campo also had assists. Jessica Beckley scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Yuba City. Diaz scored in a 1-0 win against Bella Vista. Kaitlyn Huntley and Sarah Boone split time in net for the Lady Cardinals. Corning tied Lassen 0-0 and tied Pleasant Valley 1-1 behind a Rachel Silva goal. Davis beat Corning 2-0 as did Chico, who Corning coach Teresa Lamb said was the team to beat this season. "We showed improvement throughout the day," Lamb said of the Lady Cardinals. Lamb said Diaz showed a determination to get to the ball first, while Ashlee Mishoe and Kaitlin Cox were pleasant surprises with their aggressiveness. Lamb also had praise for the work of Madison Phillips and Alexsis Saavedra moving the ball up from the back. Silva and Brandi Linnett have continued to grow since the first day of practice. Silva is back on the pitch after choosing swimming last year, but Lamb said she's picking up her skills fast. Lamb said the team will work on getting in condition for it's first game of the season, that scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Sept. 4 when the Lady Cardinals host Bella Vista.
