We work in a very small office with few employees. We have all been here for many years and have become close, but now the tension is unbearable. The affair is the big pink elephant in the room that no one will admit is there. I find what they are doing very unprofessional, and it has created some distrust toward the boss and this co- worker. I think it is affecting everyone’s work perfor- mance. My dilemma is: Do I tell his wife? Should I say something to the co-worker? I don’t want to jeopardize my job, but I’d like them to know how disgusted I am. — Needing Advice Dear Needing: Take your co- Annie’s My husband has been in and out of the hospital 13 times in the past 10 years, and neither child ever called to find out how he was. The son doesn’t bother to help his father unless we call and ask. The daughter lives out of state and often invites herself to stay here for a visit. But when we went there for the grandchildren’s grad- uation party, we had to stay in a hotel. We were not invited to the party after, and they didn’t even save us a seat at the commencement. Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar worker aside privately, and tell her everyone in the office is aware of what’s going on and it’s only a matter of time before the wife finds out — at which point, the co-worker is likely to be fired. Say it in a way that indicates you are concerned for her. You and some of your other co-workers also can notify the boss that office morale is down and you are worried that his relationship with your co- worker is partially responsible. It is best to register your disapproval in professional terms. Dear Annie: I married a wid- ower with two adopted children who don’t seem to care about their father except for the money. When I hinted that we’d like to spend a few days with them, I was told the two empty bed- rooms were for the kids when they visited. When her son got married, her father was not put in one single wedding photo. We offered to stay and help clean up and were told, ‘‘That’s not necessary. Have a safe trip home.’’ We saw them for all of three hours, and it really hurt. How do I let her know my extra bedrooms are no longer available? I don’t like to lie, but I am sick of this one-sided business. — Step- mother Who Feels Like the Wicked Witch Dear Stepmother: Please don’t do anything unless your hus- band agrees. These are, after all, his children, and you do not want to get in the middle of his rela- tionship with them. We know it is frustrating to deal with such inconsiderate people, but we don’t believe escalating the hostilities will help. Dear Annie: I’m responding to ‘‘Wanda and Worried,’’ the 75- year-old woman who needs to for- get George and ‘‘move on.’’ It grinds me to no end when people say ‘‘move on.’’ That woman’s whole world is devastat- ed, and those words seem so cal- lous. Yes, we all have to go on after a breakup, divorce or death, but being told to ‘‘move on’’ makes it sound as if our trauma is trivial. Thankfully, when my boyfriend and I broke up last year, I found awesome support through the website dailystrength.org. Please pass this on to Wanda and every- one else needing support in their lives. — Been There Dear Been There: Most people don’t intend ‘‘move on’’ to trivial- ize anyone’s experience, but rather to encourage them. But each person is different and must get past their difficulties in their own time. Thanks for the website. Our readers will appreciate the online assistance. Kraft Residence Property Is Sold The residence property of Mrs. Elmer Kraft on Washington street has been sold to Hillman Willard, of Antelope Valley. The price paid was $5,500, the property being very desirable. I can imagine that as the local citizens read the above statement they are shocked at the large number of serious crimes and arrests. Those who have been around a few years will recognize the quote was written by the sheriff who served in the 1950’s. The shock of the numbers is no doubt pretty small when matched with current documentation. Sheriff Wayne Kranig con- structed a 20 page booklet that was distrib- uted in 1953. Sheriff Kranig started his intro- duction page with “Dear Friend” and signed it; Sincerely, Wayne Kranig. This book has been in exis- tence for a year longer than our marriage. Tehama County Sheriff Kranig’s office was located in the jail build- ing on Oak Street next to the Tehama County Court House. During his years as Sheriff, I was a teen-ager who worked in the basement of the Courthouse in the Library under Lillian Nesbit the head Librari- an. The little orange covered booklet has myriads of interesting and still useable sug- gestions for Tehama County Citizens. Under, "Report Crimes Promptly," the Sheriffs Office's telephone num- ber only has three numerals; "301." Can anyone in today’s soci- ety remember when a phone number had less than ten numbers? A friend and I were dis- cussing telephones and numbers last week and we remembered that phone numbers during those days in Red Bluff were as follows; LA 301. Those of you young people who were not yet on earth when phones were simple are probably laughing into your multi-numbered cell phones that do not require being connected by wire from phone to the house wall. The 1953, orange colored booklet had fourteen headings of subjects that people were expected to read and practice in 1953. The following headings and samples of direc- tion are listed as fol- lows. " Report Crimes Promptly." "Don't take chances. Be calm. Report suspicious persons or hap- penings. When you phone, be pre- pared to give the following infor- mation: (1) Your name, address, phone number and from where you are calling. (2) .. .brief account.. .(3) .. .location where officers are needed... .(4) Description of persons involved;... "Protect Your Property" Last year (1953) there were 60,000 burglaries and one quarter of a million thefts in California. (1) ...make sure your doors and windows are locked... (2) .. .Do not advertise your absence... (3) .. .record of serial numbers and other identifying num- bers... (4) .. .lock doors and windows... (5) While in a restaurant, keep an eye on your coat and hat... Quoting each heading and list of this wonderful twenty page book would take up a bit of room in the Daily News. I will plan to insert a few of these Carolyn Barber in future columns. Although we live in 2010 there are some former admonitions regarding safety and people being involved in being a good citi- zen. In 1953 citizens were reminded to be proud to be a good citizen and to get better acquainted with local Peace Officers. The judge's in 1953 were: Curtiss E. Wetter, Supe- rior Court, Richard E. Hultgren, Justice Court, Corning District and Glenn L. Foster, Judge, Justice Court, Red Bluff District. Probation Offi- cer was, William J. Har- rington, Assistant was Roger Parker. One final admonition from the 1953 book; "Be On Guard Against Fakes And Swindlers." Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays.
