QUICK FACTS Division: VI League: California — North (8-man) Head coach:Paul Vietti OUTLOOK Coach Paul Vietti does- n’t want the chalk up Mercy’s return to football as just a learning experience — not for his group of seniors that have already given up a season of foot- ball. “I don’t want to take it as a rebuilding year or getting Mercy back on the map,” he said. Instead, Vietti wants his Warriors to challenge for a playoff spot. He says he knows it might take awhile for Mercy to find their rhythm in 8-man, but it’s something he believes can be accomplished this sea- son. It’ll all start with a pair of athletic players. Quarterback Mitchell Lopez is a solid athlete, who can both run and pass. Michael Uhalde is a speedster, who will line up at wide receiver and often motion into the backfield to help the running game. The pair will be guided by fullback Logan Baer. “He’s a load,” Vietti describes the 330-pounder. “And if he gets running downhill he’s tough to bring down.” Harlow Johnson, Steven Rodriguez and Nick Feser all should see action as well as Vietti hopes to utilize his entire bench. At wideout Uhalde will be joined by Michael Escalante and Matt Misener. Vietti said tight end play should be a strength of the Warriors offense. On defense the Warriors will utilize a 3-3-2 monster formation. Lopez and Uhalde will share time as the Warriors’ monster linebacker. Rodriguez has impressed the coaches with his end play and Jared Walters has been a recent surprise at nose guard. Lopez will handle the punting. As for kicking, that’s where an X-Factor may come into to play for the Warriors. The job would be Royce Crane’s, if and when he comes back from an injury. Crane would also give the Warriors a third legiti- mate threat on offense and 2 ROSTER Mitchell Lopez 7 Michael Uhalde 10 Brenten James 11 Matt Misener 14 Jose Rosales 17 Michael Escalante 22 Nick Feser 23 Harlow Johnson 24 Royce Crane 33 Steven Rodriguez 34 Juan Rosales 55 Chris Bartlett 63 Richard Munz 64 Mitchell Inman 72 Wesley Inman 75 Logan Baer 77 Jared Wlaters 88 Jordan Stasinowsky Tehama Tracker VOLLEYBALL Greenville 11 14 20 Los Molinos 25 25 25 The Lady Bulldogs opened their season, Tuesday, with a 3-game sweep of visiting Greenville. “Los Molinos played well tonight. Vietti said his team still needs to learn the differ- ences of 8-man football — especially when it comes to the mental aspect of getting over big plays that will no doubt happen over the course of a game. If things work out, the Warriors should like their new home in 8-man foot- ball. “I’m hoping to challenge for playoffs,” Vietti said. “They’re defiantly hungry enough. It might take us a little while to get there, but I think they are talented enough to make some noise in the playoffs.” SCHEDULE S Sept.4 — vs Champion Christian,Noon S Sept.18 — at Redding Christian,1 p.m. S Sept.25 — at Loyalton,1 p.m. F Oct.1 — at Dunsmuir,7 p.m. S Oct.9 — vs Butte Valley,Noon F Oct.15 — at Big Valley,7 p.m. F Oct..t 22 — at Hayfork,7 p.m. S Oct.30 — vs Liberty Christian,Noon S Nov.6 — vs Happy Camp,Noon Zane Petty picked off two passes, Austin Grootveld intercepted one as well and Casey Cleland made 12 tack- les.
