If it has been three or more years since the bearded iris has been dug and divided the number of blossoms will begin to decrease. August, Sep- tember and even October are good times to dig bearded iris. To lift the iris, use a pitch fork and/or shovel. Try not to puncture the root. Setting it straight –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Once the iris rhizome is lifted, shake off as much soil as possible. Wash off any remaining soil with a garden hose. If you don't have space to do this in the garden, it is sometimes easier and neater to do it on a tarp. Once the rhizomes are clean, cut the foliage to about 6 inches. No, it is not a good idea to cut the leaves unless you are dividing and replanting. Iris store energy in the leaves until they are com- pletely brown. Cutting the leaves of an iris rhizome you have removed from the ground makes the plant easier to handle when dividing and replanting and helps pre- vent water loss while the plant is becoming reestab- lished. Right now, write the iris cultivar name and or color on the leaves. Once the bearded iris rhizomes are clean, look for small to medium holes or black spots. These are telltale signs of borer damage. If your bearded iris leaves have dark streaks in them, you prob- ably have iris borers, so look closely. Using a sharp knife or pruners, remove any traces of either iris borer damage or soft rot and dispose of these sections. Do not place in the com- post pile. Both diseases spread easily, so disinfect your cutting tool with dena- tured alcohol between cuts or clorox water, to D NEWSAILY HOW TO REACH US RED BLUFF TEHAMACOUNTY THE VOICE OF TEHAMA COUNTY SINCE 1885 VOLUME 125, NUMBER 244 On the Web: www.redbluffdailynews.com MAIN OFFICE: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Main Phone (530) 527-2151 Outside area 800-479-6397 545 Diamond Ave. Red Bluff, CA 96080 ______________________ Fax: (530) 527-5774 ______________________ Mail: Red Bluff Daily News P.O. Sneak Thieves Work At Several Houses Several petty robberies were reported late yesterday afternoon and evening to the police. It seems that the operations were mostly in the southern end of town. John Morse reported that a screen was cut out on his house and someone entered through the door. W. Callahan also reported a robbery of a shed at his home. Arti- cles of little value were taken at both places. – Daily News, Sept. 2, 1920 Dear Annie: I’ve been married for 18 years and have two wonderful chil- dren. I love my husband, but there are some behaviors I simply don’t understand. ‘‘Andy’’ works long hours, while I am home alone with our two children. He rarely calls to check in, and I never know when he will be home. There have been a few occasions when I discovered the next morning that he stayed at a friend’s hunting camp all night. He doesn’t feel it’s a big deal if he doesn’t call. The other problem is when he returns home and I can tell that he has been drinking — which means he was driving under the influence. I do not understand how he can put so many people at risk. When Andy doesn’t call, I con- sider it disrespectful. I have tried talking to him, screaming, nagging and the silent treatment, but nothing makes a dent. He is a good provider and loves us, but I feel alone in this marriage. I am certainly losing respect for him. So, Annie, do I — Stay or Go? Dear S or G: Andy is avoiding his responsibilities as a husband and father. A caring, mature, responsible spouse would call to let you know if he’s coming home late, and certain- ly if he’s gone overnight. Tell Andy his behavior is not acceptable and either he cleans up his act or you’ll be seeing a marriage Meetings • The Tehama County Child Care Planning Council will meet at 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 14 at the Tehama County Department of Education, 1125 Lincoln St., in Red Bluff. For more information call 528-7380. • The Tehama County Public Health Advisory Board will meet from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. today at the Shasta Con- prevent further contami- nation. Use the same sharp, disinfected knife or pruner to divide the rhi- zomes. Do not break them apart. The ragged edge creates places for infec- tion to start. You will see natural places to make a split, such as where the rhi- zome has forked. Each section needs to be at least 3 inches long and have healthy roots grow- ing from it. Leave the cut rhizomes a day or two to heal over before replanting it. To replant your beard- ed iris, choose a full sun location that can be watered less than the lawn in the summer and start by digging a shallow hole that will be wide enough to spread out the rhi- counselor and a lawyer. Dear Annie: I have been Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar dating ‘‘Maurice’’ for more than a year. He has two grandsons, ages 10 and 5, with behavioral problems. Last summer, we took them on an all-day fishing trip, and the older boy wouldn’t stop playing with his grandfather’s fishing pole and finally broke it. During Christmas, the younger boy was batting at my ornaments, and his mother did nothing. We thought we would take the boys one at a time, but his parents say we can only take the younger boy alone. If we want to take the older boy, we have to take both of them. They say the younger boy wouldn’t understand being left behind. We didn’t feel comfort- able taking both boys on the canoe trip we were planning, so we took neither, disappointing the older boy. Maurice has neck and knee prob- lems, and the children totally wear him out. But his son and daughter- in-law make him feel guilty if he doesn’t spend time with them. What do we do? — Trying Hard Dear Trying: It’s a shame the parents don’t realize the strain they put on Grandpa and the dis- service to their boys by insisting he take both. Since Maurice wants to spend time with the grandchil- dren, suggest he do simpler things zome's roots. Make the hole about 2-3 inches deep, then create a mound in the center of the hole to just above the soil level. Place the rhizome in the center of the mound. Spread the roots around and down the mound. Cover the division with soil, being careful not to bury the rhizome entirely. It will probably sink a lit- tle as you water. Remember the bearded iris will rot and certainly won't bloom, if buried too deeply. Water well and do so weekly until you start to notice new growth. Then enjoy for another two or three years. Red Bluff Garden Club meetings are open to the public. The next program will be at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28 and will be "Hand Care" presented by Lesa Lane. Perhaps take them for ice cream and a movie. Or teach them about his favorite hobby — building birdhouses, painting, baseball, whatever. It’s not the activity but the time spent together that counts. Dear Annie: I read the letter from ‘‘C.C.,’’ who has a sex offend- er working in her building. I own a property management business and certainly would find it inappropriate to hire someone with a sexual offense record. I tell people who are looking for a rental property that if they have to register for Megan’s law, I will not rent to them. The other people in the building outweigh a sexual offend- er’s rights. If I were the owner or property manager of that building, I would want the tenant to share their concerns with me. — Peg Dear Peg: Many readers feel as you do. Before casting stones, understand that not all sexual offenders are a danger to others. Perhaps he was 18 and had sex with his 15-year-old girlfriend. But his creepy behavior certainly merits looking into. Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.
