INSIDE PUBLISHER’S PEN by JANICE BURTON I love the fall of the year, and yes, I know it’s not quite fall yet, but I start feeling fallish when I buy those back-to- school clothes, when the oppressive heat gets an nth of a degree less oppressive and when it’s time for Up & Coming Weekly’s Best of Fayetteville vote. I admit, I was around the fi rst time Publisher Bill Bowman threw the idea around to have a Best of Fayetteville vote. We thought it would be a great way to check the pulse of the community. We thought it would be a great reason to have a party. What we didn’t think about was how much work it would be. And, let me tell you, it is work. First there was the whole headache of coming up with the ballot. At the time, our staff was a little bigger, and everybody had ideas. Had we taken everyone’s ideas into consideration, the ballot would have been about 10 pages, and would have taken people days to fi ll it out. We argued, debated, and, I have to admit, at one point Joy Kirkpatrick and I actually threw a lot of people’s ideas away and honed it down to a manageable size. We were not sure what kind of response we would get, and I have to admit that as much as we prepare ourselves every year, we are always kind of surprised by the overwhelming response we get from the community. Each year we think it can’t get any bigger, and each year, we are wrong. For the past several years, the tabulations of the votes have fallen squarely on the shoulders of the mother/daughter team comprised of our Offi ce Manager Suzy Patterson and her mom, Tressie McLaughlin. This year, Suzy’s aunt actually jumped into the fray. They spend hours each day counting the ballots, and then each category is certifi ed by our accounting fi rm. Suzy told me that the vote repsonse this year was bigger than ever, noting that every time they thought they saw the light at the end of the tunnel, the mailman would fi ll it in with more envelopes and more votes. Now it’s time for our editorial staff to get to work. We will immerse ourselves for the next week in all things Fayetteville — we will learn what it is you like about the people you voted your favorites, and then we will try to share that information with you. I remember that fi rst issue. Silly me, I thought we would simply run the list, but no, Bill wanted commentary. It was a challenge. I was new to the community, and while I was learning it, I didn’t know it the way I know it now. Some of the people and places that won that year I had never heard of. So I spent hours making phone calls and waiting on return calls. To say we worked late into the night is an understatement. We worked late into the next day! This year, I don’t expect it will be that hard. We know a lot about Fayetteville. We know the people and places that our readers love. Still, we have found some interesting people that we are going to have to meet. When all of the layout is done, and the last page is sent to the printer, we will take a deep breath, relax and prepare for our favorite part of Best of Fayetteville — the party! And, in case you missed it from the title, you’re invited. The Best of Fayetteville Party is a chance for us to congratulate our winners, and to mingle with those of you who voted. We move the party around to different venues in our fair city. This year we are hosting the party at one of downtown’s newest destinations, Lido’s on Person Street. The party will be on Tuesday, Sept. 7 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. We hope to see you there, and look forward to getting to know all about you! JANICE BURTON, Associate Publisher. COMMENTS?
