2B Daily News – Tuesday, August 20, 2013 Back in brace, Brady's knee is OK after sprain FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady glanced down at his left knee brace, the one he wasn't wearing when he was injured last week. It was on at practice Monday, with some encouragement from Patriots owner Robert Kraft. ''Mr. Kraft felt pretty strongly about me wearing it,'' Brady told a pack of reporters. ''He said, 'What's the problem?' I said, 'I'll wear it. I'll wear it.''' No sense taking chances with the two-time NFL MVP and the key to the success of New England's rebuilt offense. The sprained knee Brady suffered at practice last Wednesday sent chills through Patriots fans and was still a major subject on Monday, the first time Brady spoke to the media since the incident. The Patriots never made an announcement about the injury, but Brady knew he was OK soon after he was knocked over by left tackle Nate Solder, who had been pushed back by Tampa Bay defensive end Adrian Clayborn during a joint practice. He knew the injury wasn't going to be serious ''as soon as I got inside and had our trainers get a chance to look at it,'' he said. ''There're a lot worse injuries that I've had and a lot of guys have played with far worse. ''I felt bad that it got the attention that it did because a lot of guys deal with a lot of stuff on a daily basis. I'm just lucky to be out here. After what happened to me in 2008, I love coming out to practice and playing and nothing is as exciting as that for me.'' Brady suffered a season-ending injury to the same knee in the 2008 opener. He hasn't missed a game since. He participated fully in practice last Thursday then played the first two series of Friday night's 25-21 exhibition victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He completed 11 of 12 passes for 107 yards and one touchdown and is 18 for 20 for 172 yards and two touchdowns in four series going into Thursday night's game against the Detroit Lions. Still, he had a moment of concern immediately after being knocked down at practice as he released a deep incompletion toward rookie wide receiver Aaron Dobson. ''Any time you go down, it's a little scary, but that's the sport,'' Brady said. ''It happens in the games. It happens in practice and I'm certainly not the first or the last to have it happen. I'm fortunate that it wasn't very bad, so ... I was able to get treatment and get back out on the field with my teammates and get back to work.'' Later in the day, all the phone calls and emails he received showed the depth of concern fans had about the possibility he was injured seriously. ''There were a lot of people that took time out of their day, which was pretty thoughtful, and I appreciate it,'' Brady said, ''but I just wish it wasn't under those circumstances.'' SWAP tunity. He routinely dropped balls in practice, struggled to get open in preseason games and never showed signs of being the kind of playmaker the Chiefs need on the outside. ''You don't know what you will get out of him,'' Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said before Sunday's practice. ''If he's down from drops or mental errors or whatever it is, you just work yourself out of it. You continue to press on. We always talk about short-term memory. You have to have it in this business and move on.'' Otherwise, your team eventually will move on, as Kansas City did Monday. The 49ers are hopeful that Baldwin can flourish without having to deal with the pressure that came with being a primary target in Kansas City. Even though Michael Crabtree is out with a torn Achilles tendon, San Francisco still has veteran Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams, Mario Manningham when healthy, and tight end Vernon Davis to carry most of the load in its passing game. Still, all that help wasn't enough to help Jenkins break out. The speedy wide receiver had another rough preseason showing against the Chiefs last Friday night, and many were beginning to question whether the former Illinois star would even make the team. He was targeted twice in the game, but failed to catch either pass. Jenkins had one reception in the 49ers' preseason opener against Denver, but also lost a fumble. ''I have to support the organization and my coach, but I think it's a great stepping stone for him because he gets to start over and start new,'' Davis said Monday. ''To me, he still has a lot of potential. His career's not over. He's just starting somewhere else.'' Williams said the opportunity to reunite with Smith could help things click for Jenkins, who was often criticized for his work ethic and off-thefield habits in San Francisco. ''Honestly, I'm happy for him,'' Williams said. ''It's kind of a breath of fresh air. He gets to go over there, get in a new system, get over there with Alex, and Alex will bring him up to speed. I couldn't be happier for him, because I know it's going to be a great opportunity for him.'' (Continued from page 1B) had a more perplexing rookie season than Baldwin. He appeared in three games but did not make a catch, even though he was healthy throughout his team's NFC championship season. ''We felt like this trade was beneficial for all parties involved,'' said Chiefs general manager John Dorsey, who was hired in January to replace the fired Scott Pioli — the GM who drafted Baldwin. Dorsey and Reid clearly weren't enamored of the big wide receiver after breaking down video of him upon their arrival. One of their major acquisitions in free agency was Donnie Avery, a veteran wide receiver who was expected to compete with Baldwin for the job opposite Dwayne Bowe. Baldwin didn't do much to change the Chiefs' opinion of him this offseason, either. Even though they're desperate to give Smith some downfield options, Baldwin never seized upon the oppor- A-ROD (Continued from page 1B) Ms. Ribero-Ayala received an unsolicited and unwarranted wire transfer of $50,000 from A-Rod Corp. The funds were immediately returned. Mr. Rodriguez does not have any involvement in Mr. Bosch's legal representation.'' In June, Bosch agreed to cooperate with MLB's investigation. The payments were first reported Sunday by ESPN. Rodriguez declined comment, citing the JDA's confidentiality provision. ''At some point, I think everybody will talk,'' he said early Monday. ''I think everybody has to have a little patience.'' Rodriguez is among 14 players disciplined by MLB this summer following its Biogenesis investigation. Former NL MVP Ryan Braun accepted a 65-game suspension and 12 players agreed to 50-game penalties. The 38-year-old Rodriguez made his big league season debut Aug. 5, the same day his suspension was announced. He had been sidelined since left hip surgery in January and his return was delayed by a leg injury in July. Rodriguez batted .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs in last year's playoffs, and Tacopina claims an Oct. 11 MRI at New York-Presbyterian Hospital revealed the left hip injury. The Yankees maintain Rodriguez complained then only of a problem with his right hip, which was operated on in March 2009. ''They put him out there in that condition when he shouldn't have even been walking, much less playing baseball,'' Tacopina said against Barry Bonds, Marion Jones and others. Manfred proposed that both sides disclose information and documents relating to: —All drug tests that were conducted on Rodriguez under the program and their results; — All prior violations of the program committed by Rodriguez, and; — All documents relating to the issue of whether Rodriguez obstructed the office of the commissioner's investigation. Tacopina, a lawyer with one of the four firms representing Rodriguez, said the players' association would have to agree to waive confidentiality. ''The letter was nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt,'' Tacopina said in a statement. ''The letter that was addressed to my law office with the words 'Via Hand Delivery' on top was in fact never delivered to my office but was instead given to the 'Today' show, which in and of itself is yet another violation of the confidentiality clause of the JDA. They know full well that they have to address the letter to the MLBPA and such a waiver would require the MLBAPA to be party of the agreement and signatures. It's nothing but a theatrical trap hoping I would sign knowing that I couldn't and in fact would have me breaching the JDA agreement if I did.'' Tacopina also claims Yankees President Randy Levine told Dr. Bryan Kelly of the Hospital for Special Surgery, who operated on Rodriguez's left hip in January, that he didn't want to see Rodriguez play for the team again. Levine has denied the allegation. ''This is part of the mindset of what they're doing to this guy and working in conjunction with MLB to try to keep him off the field,'' Tacopina said. Tracy Hickenbottom, a HSS spokeswoman, said Kelly had no comment. The Yankees said in a statement ''we relied upon Dr. Christopher Ahmad and the New York-Presbyterian Hospital for medical diagnosis, opinions and treatment. Louise Motherwell claimed Stephen Turano of Tacopina's firm has represented her in a New Jersey case. One of Motherwell's lawyers said last year she had a consensual relationship with Cashman, and the filing said she shared information with Turano claiming Cashman ''intentionally misled federal investigators during the Roger Clemens investigation,'' ''knew of Yankee clubhouse steroid use by various Yankee players by name'' and ''was ambivalent to the use of performanceenhancement drugs so long as nothing came back to the Yankees organization.'' Tacopina said Motherwell never retained his firm, and that Turano has his own firm in New Jersey. The Angels made the announcement Monday before playing Cleveland. Pujols hasn't played since July 26. He had been saying he wanted to return when his partially torn plantar fascia healed. The injury has bothered him all season, and forced the first baseman to mostly become a designated hitter. The Angels began the season with high hopes, but are far back in the playoff race. The 33-year-old Pujols hit .258 with 17 home runs and 64 RBIs this year. LIST (Continued from page 1B) alternate in 2011, sat out Monday's practice with sore ribs. ''You're going to have to deal with (injuries) during the season ... and it is a next man up philosophy,'' coach Dennis Allen said. ''You're going to play the game that week so from that standpoint it's good preparation for us. At some point somebody's going to have to step in and play, and we anticipate and expect backup players to play just like the starters.'' Brisiel, Oakland's starting right guard in 2012, returned albeit in limited fashion. The Raiders' top free agent acquisition a year ago, Brisiel has been slowed by a knee injury and is still struggling to recover from offseason ankle surgery. Oakland's offensive line as a whole has been slammed by injuries in camp. Left tackle Jared Veldheer underwent surgery last week to repair a torn triceps muscle. Watson, the 42nd overall pick in this year's NFL draft, began camp on the non-football injury list and made a brief return on Aug. 7 before aggravating a calf injury he originally suffered in late July. The Raiders have had to shuffle things around as a result. Tony Bergstrom is penciled in at left guard but has been taking reps at tackle. Alex Barron, who like Watson was expected to push right tackle Khalif Barnes for the starting job, has moved to the left side to replace Veldheer. At least running back Darren McFadden looked well. The team's leading rusher two of the past three seasons, McFadden was bothered by a sore shoulder on Sunday but looked fine a day later. ''We've had the situation where we've brought some guys out here and they've reinjured themselves,'' Allen said. ''We want to make sure that guys are back and ready to go so we get a chance to evaluate them.'' Notes: Rookie TE Nick Kasa suffered a bruised quad muscle. ... The team will practice for two more days in Napa before ending camp and relocating to the team's facilities in Alameda. ... Brandian Ross replaced Branch at strong safety with the first-team defense. ... WR/KR Josh Cribbs is also working as the Raiders' emergency long-snapper and had one of his snaps sail more than 10 yards over the head of punter Chris Kluwe. (Continued from page 1B) 27th. SHR will remain at least a three-car operation next season when it adds Kevin Harvick. Waltrip said Martin achieved all the goals both he and the team set when he began a 24-race schedule in the No. 55 in 2012. Martin nearly won at Michigan before running out of fuel with four laps left. MWR announced last week that Vickers will drive the No. 55 Toyota for a full Sprint Cup schedule beginning next season. ''No one wants to see Tony out of the 14, but I am appreciative of the opportunity to get more seat time in the 55 as a result,'' Vickers said. Waltrip said MWR would now turn its attention toward signing No. 55 crew chief Rodney Childers and keep him with Vickers for next season. ''Brian is poised to race for a championship,'' Waltrip said. ''The job he's done in the 55 on a limited basis has been really impressive. To be able to be a part timer and grab a win like he did at Loudon, that's just amazing in this day and age.'' It took some cooperation to get this deal done. Martin needed MWR and sponsors Aaron's and Toyota to let him out of his deal to jump to SHR and drive a Chevrolet. Martin could now help send the No. 14 into the owner's standings portion of the Chase and knock out an MWR team. Martin, who has five runner-up series finishes and no championships in a three decade Cup career, said he has yet to consider his plans for 2014. ''A week ago, I was going to race a partial schedule,'' he said. ''Now, I'm racing all but one with a whole new situation with what I feel like is a lot of challenges and a lot of pressure. ''And I don't want to think about 2014 at all right now.''
