6B Daily News – Tuesday, August 20, 2013 Post-vacation, Obama to face Egypt, spending talks WASHINGTON (AP) — Fresh from a weeklong vacation, President Barack Obama has to confront such issues as the crisis in Egypt and federal spending before getting back out on the road to sell his economic proposals. Obama returned Sunday night from the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard. On Thursday, the president sets out on a two-day bus trip through upstate New York and Pennsylvania to lay out ideas to help make a college education more affordable for the middle class. Stops include the State University of New York at Buffalo and Henninger High School in Syracuse. On Friday, Obama plans to answer questions at a town hall-style event at SUNYBinghamton before a stop at Lackawanna College in Scranton, Pa. He is to be joined there by Vice President Joe Biden, a native of the northeastern Pennsylvania city. Obama has a private meeting Monday with various financial regulators to discuss ongoing efforts to strengthen the financial system, including the implementation of the Dodd-Frank law revamping the nation's financial system and the Consumer Protection Act. Obama spoke publicly just once during his vacation, against the violence in Egypt that left scores of people dead. The White House is currently reconsidering all U.S. assistance to Egypt, and ''will consider additional steps as we deem necessary,'' National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said Sunday. Also competing for Obama's attention will be negotiations with congressional Republicans to get a new spending plan in place by the Sept. 30 end of the federal budget year or risk a government shutdown, and to increase the government's borrowing authority. His week ahead also includes a White House recognition ceremony Tuesday for the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only NFL team to achieve a perfect season. The Dolphins, who went 17-0, never made it to the White House after their Super Bowl win 40 years ago in 1973. President Richard Nixon was immersed in the Watergate scandal at the time and, back then, White House visits by victorious professional and collegiate sports teams were not as common as they are today. Many Dolphins team members are expected to attend, including fullback Larry Csonka and Hall of Fame coach Don Shula. B-1B bomber crashes in Montana, crew ejects SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A B-1B bomber crashed in a remote area of southeastern Montana on Monday, but its four crew members survived after ejecting from the South Dakota-based aircraft, Air Force officials said. Two pilots and two weapons system officers ejected before the bomber crashed about 9:30 a.m. near Broadus, Mont., said Col. Kevin Kennedy, commander of the 28th Bomb Wing. He said they were taken by ambulance and air to two South Dakota hospitals, but none of them suffered lifethreatening injuries. Aerial photos of the crash show a massive charred area of prairie land void of recognizable aircraft parts. ''No one likes to lose an aircraft. It's bittersweet that we did,'' Kennedy said during a news conference Monday afternoon. ''Luckily, all four air crew are safely recovered.'' The plane, which was built in 1985, was based out of South Dakota's Ellsworth Air Force Base, one of only two bases in the U.S. that have B1B crews. Ellsworth has 28 of the planes, including the one that crashed, the Air Force said. Kennedy said Ellsworth has temporarily shut down flights until his maintenance and operations group commanders can ensure that they can safely resume. The cost of a B-1B bomber is about $283 million, said Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Allen Herritage. Kennedy said the Air Force will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred about 170 miles southeast of Billings, Mont. The B-1B is a swing-wing bomber intended for highspeed, low-altitude penetration missions. The only other base with B-1B crews is Dyess Air Force Base in Abilene, Texas. Broadus, Mont., is a town within the Powder River Training Complex, an 8,300square-mile block of airspace centered just northwest of where South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana meet. An Air Force plan to more than triple the airspace, which is used in training exercises for B-1B and B-52 bombers based in the Dakotas, has been in the works for more than six years. The Air Force Salmonella outbreak linked to NM poultry hatchery SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A national outbreak of salmonella has been linked to an eastern New Mexico hatchery that sells live baby chickens, ducks and other poultry by mail and supplies them to feed stores, state health officials announced Monday. The state Department of Health said a strain of salmonella that's infected more than 300 people in 37 states was found in a duck pen at Privett Hatchery in Portales. No deaths have been reported, but 51 people have been hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children ages 10 and younger account for nearly three-fifths of those who've become ill. People buy baby chickens and other poultry to keep as pets and to raise the birds for eggs or meat. Paul Ettestad, state public health veterinarian, said the hatchery was most likely the source of the outbreak. However, he said questions remain because federal officials have found that the people sickened with salmonella had purchased baby poultry at 113 feed store locations that were supplied by 18 mail order hatcheries in several states. The CDC said more testing is ongoing. wants to add three ''military operation areas'' to create a fly space of about 27,500 square miles — an area larger than West Virginia. The last time a B-1B was destroyed in a crash was on Dec. 12, 2001, when a bomber involved in the war in Afghanistan slammed into the Indian Ocean near the island of Diego Garcia, Herritage said. A cause has never been determined. The crew had reported having difficulty controlling the bomber. All four crewmen ejected safely, including the pilot and copilot, who were from Ellsworth. At the start of the war in Afghanistan, B-1Bs and B52s were making almost daily bombing runs over the country and began pounding alQaida mountain hide-outs in the Tora Bora region. In April 2008, an Ellsworth B-1B bomber caught fire after landing at alUdeid Air Base in Qatar. The crew members all escaped safely. A month earlier, an Ellsworth B-1B collided with two emergency-response vehicles during landing after reporting an in-flight emergency at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam.
