For QuaSonya Johnson, teaching cosmetology at Huntsville Center for Technology is about much more than preparing students for a career – it's about changing lives. Former student Janiyah Braithwaite says Johnson has been "more than a cosmetology teacher." Braithwaite describes her as a mentor who has offered encouragement, unconditional support, and even practical help when students needed food or gas money. "She has always helped others," Braithwaite says. "She'll always have a special place in my heart." Braithwaite nominated Johnson for the Redstone Federal Credit Union Teacher Appreciation Giveaway this summer, in cooperation with media company Hville Blast. Johnson, a Redstone member, believes strong relationships begin with one simple principle: respect. "You must respect them," she says. "Love first, respect, and no judgment. What you put out is what you get back." at philosophy shapes every interaction in her classroom. Each morning, she prays for the strength to give every student the support they need. "When I get home at the end of the day, I am exhausted because I give them all that I am," she says. Beyond the classroom, Johnson serves as a bowling coach, helps coordinate the Jemison Closet for students in need, and leads a before-school prayer group.
