Jan started as a telephone/mail loan specialist earning $3.22 an hour. e job gave her exactly what she wanted – an opportunity to work directly with members. She remembers helping soldiers stationed in other states apply for loans by telephone and get the money they needed into their accounts. From there, Jan built a career marked by a willingness to learn, lead, and embrace change. In the early 1980s, she moved into Human Resources as Redstone's first trainer. She visited every Redstone branch, spending time observing tellers and loan officers working in their roles, so she could develop an effective training curriculum. She also managed employee records – all on paper at that time. Jan later advanced from a trainer to HR Manager, to Assistant Vice President, to Vice President, to Senior Vice President, and now she holds the position of Executive Vice President for People and Culture. Her current position expanded her responsibilities far beyond HR. She currently oversees Human Resources, Community Relations, Organizational Culture, the Schools Program, and the Tennessee market. "When you work in Human Resources, you are a change agent," Jan said. "You must be willing to get out of your comfort zone in order to drive strategic thinking and planning." Over five decades, Jan has been part of milestones both large and small. She created Redstone's toll-free telephone number and oversaw the launch of Redstone's on-site clinic and cafeteria. She even helped modernize Redstone's dress code, eliminating the requirement that women wear closed-toe shoes and pantyhose to work and that men wear jackets and ties – another reminder of just how much the workplace has changed during her career. She is extremely proud to have been an instrumental leader in facilitating Redstone's culture transformation. e credit union's award-winning culture continues to grow and evolve.
