KatkimFineJewelry.com Depiction of Mansa Musa in the Catalan Atlas (1375), by cartographer Abraham Cresques. The accompanying inscription in Catalan partly reads: "This king is the richest and noblest of all these lands due to the abundance of gold that is extracted from his lands." [Collection of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF)] Deemed by historians to be the wealthiest person who ever lived, Mansa Musa of Mali—whose 14th-century empire produced roughly 50% of the world's gold—caused a sensation during his hajj in July 1324. According to accounts, his pilgrimage to Mecca featured a caravan of more than 15,000 (comprising servants, enslaved people, soldiers, and prominent members of the royal court), and included 100 camels, each carrying 300 pounds of gold dust. Adjusted for today's values, that's more than $2 billion for traveling money! And that doesn't consider his 500 liveried servants, each wielding a solid gold staff weighing 4 pounds. Beggars were given large ingots, while vendors in the markets and bazaars were overpaid and tipped with fistfuls of gold dust. His largesse proved so extreme that Egypt's gold market was completely flooded, devaluing the gold dinar by 20% (relative to the silver dirham) and requiring 12 years for the market to recover.
