Some (like the 'Maharaja' Ring) feature a reverse-set stone underneath the main stone, so that their respective culets are virtually touching. Others (like the Vietnamese Spinel Cocktail Ring) feature a similar construction, wherein the reverse-set stone has given way to a sea of diamond pavé (and there's certainly no shame in that game). e 'Waikaloa' Pineapple Pendant, an incredibly smile-inducing piece set with nearly nineteen carats of sapphires and tsavorites, hanging from a rosary-inspired chain set with another sixteen carats of sapphires delivers sophistication with whimsy; while the use of the rubies and the white and blue sapphires of the 'Silk Route' Bracelet to evoke the subtle patterns of Uzbekistani ikat fabrics is downright masterful. Meanwhile, the pieces Laut designs "for day"—such as the Malagasy Sapphire Ring from the "de Jaeger" collection, which features a yellow sapphire (that's been heat treated to a lush orange hue) set in a gypsy ring of rose gold with a satin finish—are elegant in their simplicity, thanks to Laut's aesthetic of clean lines and straightforward design. Each Alexander Laut jewel is handcraed, one piece at a time, to Laut's exacting specifications, by a team of Japanese jewelers known for their attention to detail and quality. What's more, since Laut starts with the incredible stones he sources from around the globe, and then designs a jewel to suit the stone(s), each piece is unique; and as befitting something so unique and valuable, each jewel is assigned a unique ID number that is engraved into the setting alongside Laut's jeweler's mark and the assay mark. As Ms. Parstabar once so succinctly declared (channeling her inner Diana Vreeland), "Alexander authors jewelry!" How 'bout them (pine)apples?
