Coach Irvin Maxwell is already call- ing the season a success based on an attribute they don’t keep stats for. “We’ve already had success with the OUTLOOK kids. I can see it in their attitudes. They’re going to give me a 110 percent,” he said. On offense the Bulldogs are making a philosophy switch under Maxwell and turning to a power run game. Maxwell said the choice to use a power offense stemmed from having a short time from when he took over the team to the start of practice, but with the Bulldogs personnel the choice fits. “(Other coaches) they’re always trying to reinvent the game,” Maxwell said. “Football’s been around a long time, this is the offense we know, it’s simple.” Fullback Luis Camacho has impressed coaches and teammates and should be a commanding force both running the ball himself and paving holes for starting tail- back Bryer Whetstone. Ramon Avalos and tight end Graham Wagenfuhr will be the main targets for returning junior quarterback Sean Con- rad. “Last year our record and even my stats aren’t great, but just the experience I got quarterbacking varsity football as a sophomore was huge,” Conrad said. Maxwell said passing plays have been designed to utilize his receivers strengths. Of course their success will also come down to the arm of Conrad, a challenge the quarterback likes. “Even last year I was the guy — it’s pressure, but I thrive off of it,” he said. Conrad will switch uniform numbers from No. 10 to No. 3 this season as a trib- ute to his brother J.C., one of the Bull- dogs losses in graduation. Junior quarterback Sean Conrad returns, but it’s a new era for Bulldogs football On defense the Bulldogs will use a 4- 3 with a small, but quick defensive line and it’s that side of the ball that has Maxwell excited. said. “Our defense is the key to this,” he Avalos has shown ability to play many different roles on the team, but on defense he has especially stood out. “If you throw a ball by him, he’s going to intercept it,” Maxwell said. The Bulldogs are also hoping to have an advantage on special teams. Oracio Vargas will handle extra points and Kevin Garnica’s leg strength will be used for longer field goal opportunities. Wagenfuhr said the key to this season will be the Bulldogs staying together as a unit and keeping a positive mind. Even if the Bulldogs don’t deliver vic- tories this year, one thing they want to be sure to accomplish is to leave everything ROSTER 3 Sean Conrad 5Edward Garnica 10 12 15 Ramon Avalos 24 30 33 44 52 54 55 56 66 68 72 74 77 79 Trevor Morton Luis Camacho Steven Funes Alec Hardy Michael Kling Kevin Funes Trevor Chamberlain Oracio Vargas Brian Anderson Lance Spencer Will Torres Kevin Garnica Graham Wagenfuhr Gilbert Zamora Bryer Whetstone T.J. If everything goes to Maxwell’s plans, the Bulldogs won’t have to worry about the latter happening as often as they have become accustomed to in the past. Rec league basketball, volleyball sign-ups After a successful softball season it’s time to head indoors. Teams interested in playing in the city of Red Bluff’s recreation basketball or volleyball programs must submit a league entry request to the Parks and Recre- ation Department by Friday, Sept. 10. The department is located at the Commu- nity and Senior Center. A preliminary roster with names and address- es of players must be included with the form, which can be picked up at the department. The city will use pri- ority registration with the highest priority given to those teams which have a city spon- sor and the most number of city residents on their preliminary rosters. Residents and spon- sor must be within the city limits and must match the final roster. Once the deadline has been passed, teams will be notified of the man- ager’s meeting. Early registration fees will then be due in the amount of $160. All participants will be required to sign a waiver form. Two non-Tehama County players will be permitted on teams and they must pay an addi- tional $25 fee. For further informa- tion call 527-8177.
