Winter 2026 | 39 In 1941, upon returning from a South American sojourn with her second husband, William Paley, Mrs. Dorothy Hart Hearst Paley (later Hirshon) visited the Fifth Avenue showroom of her dear friend, the Sicilian nobleman Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura and Marquis of Murata la Cerda (better known as Fulco di Verdura), with a bag filled with emeralds she'd acquired in Colombia. She had but one request of the popular jeweler: Something she could wear "in daytime" (in other words, no diamonds).
