46 SCHWANKE-KASTEN Burke Candy & Ingredients is a fourth-generation, family owned candy business based in Riverwest, Milwaukee. ey opened their first stand-alone retail location in the wonderful neighborhood of Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin in March of 2022. Since opening their storefront it has been welcomed by existing and new customers who come in to get a taste their hand-crafted creations. Julia Burke started her retail line of chocolates nearly 30 years ago, after studying to become a Master Chocolatier and Confectioner. She wanted to expand her repertoire beyond her tried and true English Toffee—almond toffee with dark chocolate topped with roasted almonds. She has continued to grow and expand her brand in the Milwaukee area. Since then, her son and daughter have joined in the fun of candy-making. All of the confections are hand-crafted in small batches in their Riverwest manufacturing plant. ey pride themselves on quality, passion and craftsmanship that you can taste in every creation they make. Whether it's breaking toffee by hand, or sprinkling sea salt onto their caramels one-by-one, they do it with care and detail. Most of the recipes date back to 1929, when Tim Burke's grandfather started Burke in Chicago as a manufacturer for the candy, bakery and ice cream industries. e Burkes still supply to those industries and make everything in their manufacturing plant in Riverwest.
