Zeta Psi Chapter 2 "I rushed two other fraternities in the fall of 1965. It didn't take long; without a question, Sigma Chi was the No. 1 choice," Walt McBeath '69 shared. The brotherhood and friendliness of Zeta Psi immediately stood out to Walt, and he appreciated the diverse personalities of his brothers. "The Sig house always provided a safe haven—friends, rest, food, and many activities." Sigma Chi introduced Walt to his future business partner of 50 years, Elliott Hilsinger '69. Together, they owned a La-Z-Boy franchise, expanding to four cities and eventually becoming the top La-Z-Boy dealer in the Midwest. Walt also met his wife of 54 years, Susan, thanks to Sigma Chi. Susan, who passed away in 2024, loved campus involvement; she was a Kappa Alpha Theta, Sigma Chi Sweetheart of 1968-69, and UC cheerleader. Walt fondly recalls "dancing with my Sweetheart to the midnight hour" at the many parties. As an alumna, she remained dedicated to her sisterhood, serving as the house chairman for 25 years. Walt and Susan's daughters both participated in Greek life as well: Lauren was a Theta at DePauw and Allison was a Theta at UC. Walt has also been devoted to Sigma Chi over the years, serving as a former alumni chapter president and financially supporting the fraternity. "The alumni support has always been impressive," Walt said. "It must remain strong to provide the activities and the same opportunities for success." To recognize Walt's contribution, Sigma Chi named the Zeta Psi Chapter Museum in honor of Susan Butler-McBeath. Walt is also dedicated to UC and supports the university's athletics and endowed scholarships. In 2014, he was awarded membership to the Order of the Black Blazer for his service. He is also an original member of the George Smith Society and UCATS. In his free time, Walt is an avid art collector, primarily of Southwest oils and sculptures, Russian oils, and various works by Cincinnati artists. He is also chairman of fundraising for the Western Wildlife Corridor (a 10-year tenure) with the goal of preserving the Ohio River Corridor from Cincinnati to the Indiana state line.
