Gott’s two themes this season appear to be practice and dedication. “Practice, practice, prac- tice — that’s how we all learn,” she said. It helps the incoming tal- ent continues to get better, enough so that senior Courtney Boes, said from top to bottom the Spartans are a lot closer in talent than she’s seen in years past. Boes figures to the sea- son as the Spartans No. 1 on their ladder. She’ll be followed by junior Dina Menendes at No. 2. Menendez said she’s excited about the challenge of stepping higher up the ladder and facing more dif- ficult opponents this sea- son. Menendes also agrees the level of play across the roster is close, but that should lead to better prac- tices. Meredith Lord, Alli Devine, Ashley Hone, Allie Madison and Haylie Keaton will provide depth for the Spartans ladder. The Clements sisters could also factor before the season ends. They were a perfect 11-0 on their way to claiming the Northern Athletic League title and only stumbled twice, the second in a heart- wrenching playoff match with Pleasant Valley. Mellissa Owens and Sonya Scott may have grad- uated, but Victoria Owens is back and by the end of last season, she was giving the seniors all they could handle anyway. Owens worked her way up from the bottom to the top of the ladder last season, compiling a 13-3 record in singles competition and a 14-2 mark in doubles. She credits playing nightly with her father as the main reason she has been successful in high school. Owens also oozes confidence. “I’m sure if Iwasn’t con- fident, Iwould let things get to me,” she said. Corning’s most likely No. 2 will be Sarah Drum, who went 22-2 in all match- es last season. Together, Owens and Drum were 7-0 as a doubles team in 2009, which is a good sign as they’ll likely be paired as the top doubles team this season. Corning appears to have a new set of sisters on the verge of making a splash as well with Elle and Nikki Davis. The sisters should factor into the ladder along with returners Cora Bryant, Dorinda Walker and senior Mayella Luevano. Luevano and German foreign exchange student Alex Hofmann are the lone seniors on a young roster. The schedule consists of three matches with West Valley, a rivalry Luevano said she looks forward too. “Every time it’s like a Corning Cardinals No. 1 Victoria Owens After last year, that’s really, really tight match. We’re sweating, nervous, biting our nails,” she said. Previous meeting The teams haven’t met since Sept. 21, 2007, when Williams shutout the Bulldogs 16-0 in Los Molinos. David Covarrubias connected with Emanuel Martinez on a 27-yard pass in the first quarter for the first score and then found Danny Padilla from 26 yards out in the second quarter. Paul Brownfield caught an 85-yard reception for the Bulldogs and recorded 11 tackles on defense. Tim Crane recorded two sacks and Andy Haley made 10 tackles. JC Conrad had an interception. Players to watch Los Molinos — #3 Sean Conrad, #44 Luis Camacho, #24 Bryer Whetstone Williams — #5 Carlos Velazquez, #7 Pedro Boites, #3 Jesus Camarena Notes: Both teams return their quarterbacks from last season and both can be dual pass or run threats...Velazquez threw for 1,186 yards last season and led the Yellowjack- ets in rushing with 466 yards...Boites was second on the team with 249 rush yards, but will likely be Velazquez’s first receiving option...the Williams line is said to be young and undersized, which should bode well for the Bulldogs. Giants make up 9-run deficit, still lose in 12 Cincinnati 12 Giants 11 12 innings SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — For the Cincinnati Reds, blowing a 10-1 lead didn’t mean losing the game. Only hours after Atlanta squandered that exact same advantage and fell to Colorado, the Reds wound up with a win — barely. Saved by Paul Janish’s tying single in the ninth inning, the Reds regrouped and rallied past the San Francisco Giants 12-11 Wednesday on Joey Votto’s two-out, tiebreaking single in the 12th. Votto homered twice, and finished with four hits and four RBIs as the NL Central leaders avoided a sweep. ‘‘We had such a comfortable lead for most of the game,’’ Votto said. ‘‘For them to come back like that, it could have been difficult to recover. Momentum plays a big role in a game like this. We just showed some resiliency to come back our- selves.’’ Votto hit a pair of home runs and Jonny Gomes hit his 100th career shot that gave the Reds their huge lead going into the bottom of the fifth. The Giants came back and Aubrey Huff’s sacrifice fly capped a six-run burst in the eighth that put them ahead 11-10. A two-base throwing error by third baseman Pablo Sandoval on Drew Stubbs’ one-out grounder in the Reds ninth set up Janish’s single.
