H ow have you remained connected to ATΩ? The Hon. Robert O'Neal '71 has devoted himself to a lifetime of brotherhood loyalty from undergraduate leadership to alumni board engagement. Also a proud father of an ATΩ brother, Bob's legacy has been one of unwavering fraternal commitment. FROM PLEDGING TO PRESIDENCY "ATΩ was the best fit for me in terms of the other guys I met," Bob said. With leadership opportunities and a remarkable reputation, Gamma Theta left a great first impression. During portions of Bob's junior and senior years, he served as president of the house and had a great chance for professional development. Serving a variety of members with different needs, Bob learned communication and management skills that he carried into his professional career as a juvenile court judge. "One thing that being president helped me with was making tough decisions that aren't always popular but are hopefully the right ones to make on behalf of the chapter." ONGOING INVOLVEMENT Bob's son joining Gamma Theta as a freshman was a catalyst for Bob to join the alumni board. After a couple years, the board president stepped down, and Bob came into the position he has now held for two decades. "I think it's really important to pay it forward," Bob said, reflecting on ATΩ's lifelong influence. With longstanding alumni connections and even service on the national board, Bob has served the fraternity so today's members can enjoy a similar ATΩ experience. On a social level, Bob enjoys yearly football trips with fellow alumni and seeing brothers at ATΩ gatherings whenever possible. SUPPORTING GAMMA THETA As alumni board president, Bob enjoys seeing how today's undergraduates operate Gamma Theta and accomplish great things like a True Merit Award. "That's always satisfying when they work hard to reach a goal and do just that. I've really enjoyed that." From his board position, Bob recognizes the funding necessary to operate a fraternity chapter, which is why he was glad to support Gamma Theta's latest capital campaign with a personal contribution. A safe chapter house is crucial for fraternal growth, and the campaign was another way for Bob to show his lifelong dedication to ATΩ. With a younger brother, a son, nephew, and son-in-law all in ATΩ, the fraternity has played a large role in Bob's family life. Bob is married to a Delta Zeta from Iowa State, and his wife is similarly involved as a sorority alumna. In their spare time, they enjoy seeing their five grandchildren.
