MU NEWS Χ Ω Mu Chapter of Chi Omega at the University of California, Berkeley Spring 2025 Chapter Advisors during Presents 1997 at the Mu Chapter house. From top left: Helen Nicholas, Psi Theta '67, Dee Hawk Pearce '63, Caryl Pogue James, Xi '54, and Misty. M isty personified the beautiful words of the Chi Omega Symphony and was treasured by everyone who had the good fortune to know her. She joined the Omega Chapter on January 2, 2025, surrounded by loved ones and friends in her final days. Misty helped many as a mentor, was philanthropic, and volunteered with many causes in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond. Helen "Misty" Whitson Tyree, Chi Beta '65 was born in Louisiana and brought her southern graciousness to her alma mater, Purdue University, where she became a Chi Omega sister. Her contributions to Chi Omega are storied. Moving around the country for business with her husband, Lee, Misty was a part of many alumnae chapters. Once they planted their roots in San Francisco, Misty flourished and thrived as a dedicated Chi Omega volunteer. Her résumé includes service on the Governing Council, first as the National Alumnae Officer and then as the National Secretary, a founder of "Travel with a Chi O," an organizer of many conventions and Firesides, a part of development and training teams, and a member of the 1895 Society and Margaret Hyde Heritage Society. In addition, she was a President of the San Francisco Alumnae Chapter and a Statewide Recruitment Introduction Chairman. For Mu Chapter, she was an endless inspiration to generations of women during their collegiate years. Among the advisor positions she held, she demonstrated skill and dedication in personnel, scholarship, and new member in addition to serving on the House Corporation Board (HCB). This litany of activity does not convey the essence of why she was so deeply loved by her sisters. It does not convey her peals of laughter, joyful demeanor, wise leadership, dignity in the face of adversity, or the genuine care about each Chi Omega friend she made. She will be deeply missed. Beloved Sister Misty Tyree, Chi Beta '65 Joins the Omega Chapter Reflection by Misty's Goddaughter, Christina Gray Rutter, Eta Lambda '01 "Misty was the best godmother, always there for ballet recitals, holiday gatherings, or simply to hang out on the occasional day off from school. She was known for surprise appearances, like the time she showed up at the airport before I flew off to college and again at my Chi Omega initiation. I opened my eyes to find her dressed in white, surrounded by my new sisters—her presence a powerful reminder of her love for me and her dedication to Chi Omega." Reflection by Mu Advisor Susan Ruhne, Iota Delta '85 "Misty loved Mu and working with the collegians, sharing her enthusiasm for Chi Omega while, in her gentle, encouraging way, always pushing us to be the best sisters and leaders we could be. She helped, encouraged, mentored, and coached the Advisory Team. Anyone who worked with her would at some point hear her classic line, 'Now Susan, why are you doing it this way?' which was code for, 'It's time to refer to your manual, the rules, or to ask her what you should do.' She empowered us. Misty realized our purposes both for the enrichment of her life and the greater happiness of her sisters." H O N O R I N G O U R I N S P I R I N G S I S T E R
