Notes of the Lyre PHI CHAPTER OF ALPHA CHI OMEGA | UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS | SPRING 2025 S isterhood—what is it, and what does it mean to you? Google tells me it is the bond and solidarity between women, often based on shared experiences, concerns, or a sense of community, that can extend beyond biological relationships. Alpha Chi Omega gives us a foundation to build a sisterhood. I look at the wealth of relationships Alpha Chi Omega has granted me. The first were formed within Phi Chapter as a collegian, some of which continue today. As I continue my journey with the House Corporation Board as a volunteer, I have formed new relationships. These relationships impact and enrich my life and are there because of my Alpha Chi Omega sisterhood, for which I am ever grateful. In addition to the sisterhood we all experience, everyone on the House Corporation Board is thankful for the continued financial support we receive from our sisters! This support helps us keep rent costs as low as possible for our collegians, as well as helping to improve and maintain aspects of the house. We want to update the dining room and are exploring options for reconfiguring the chapter room. The collegians outnumber the chairs and space, so the room is not used for weekly chapter; thus, the area could be better utilized as a study space for individuals and groups. Study spaces today are so much more than the study cubbies of the past. They have large TVs the women can use as laptop screens and provide lots of places to power all those electronics. It's also important to have comfy chairs, couches, pillows, and good lighting for reading and studying. I also wanted to let you know we are making an administrative change to our fundraising. You will see that donations by mail will be sent to Alpha Chi Omega Headquarters, while online donations are through the national website. Phi Chapter remains the recipient of your donation! We are just working more closely with the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, and because of this, you will see more communication from them. This also makes all donations to Phi Chapter House Corporation Board tax- deductible and eligible for employer matching, qualified charitable distributions from your IRA, and donor-advised fund disbursements. Please reach out if you have any questions. However, I find that Alpha Chi Omega gives back just as much, if not more. Do you have time to give to Phi Chapter and see what you get back in return? House Corporation Board is looking for board members. The board's main purpose is the oversight of the chapter facility at 1500 Sigma Nu Place. We work on simple little projects, like replacing a broken towel bar in the bathroom, to overseeing contractors who are completing improvements and repairs. The time commitment isn't huge, and while living in the Lawrence area is a plus, it isn't required. Long-distance applicants can participate virtually. I am not local and like having an excuse to travel to Lawrence a few times a year. The collegians appreciate the work we do, and I love watching the women make lifelong memories at the house. If you're interested in getting involved or would like further information, please contact Missi Schoen at mmschoen@ruraltel.net.
