I n fall 2024, the University of Washington welcomed 7,195 new freshmen—one of the largest incoming classes! Once acceptance letters are sent, new students face a number of decisions, including where to live. Should they stay at home, move into a dorm, rent an apartment, or consider joining a fraternity? For those interested in Greek life, there's the added challenge of choosing from over 20 IFC chapters, all competing for attention. This was the experience of Aiden Masterjohn '24 in spring 2024. After his acceptance to UW, Aiden was approached by the Sigma Nu Recruitment Team— but with a personal touch. His name had been referred to the chapter by alumnus and Board President Jeff Roberts '80. Instead of sending a generic message, Sigma Nu brothers were able to connect with Aiden by mentioning Jeff's referral, who works with Aiden's stepmother. After meeting the brothers, touring the house, and enjoying a home- cooked meal from Geri, Aiden signed his bid, moved in, and was initiated into the brotherhood. "I'm very grateful that J.R. referred me to Sigma Nu," Aiden said. "It's given me the chance to make lifelong friendships and connections. The house and the brothers will always have a special place in my heart." Michael Chong '17, recruitment advisor, emphasized the value of alumni referrals: "Alumni referrals are a huge asset for our recruitment team. With so many new students, having a personal connection helps us stand out as intentional and focused. It also gives us a better understanding of the student, helping us highlight aspects of Sigma Nu that will resonate with them, giving us an advantage over other chapters." As alumni, you play a critical role in helping us build a strong, diverse brotherhood at Gamma Chi. If you know any high school graduates or students connected to your family, friends, or colleagues who will be attending UW in fall 2025, please refer them to us. Your referral creates apersonal, meaningful connection that can make all the difference in identifying the next generation of Sigma Nu brothers. To submit a referral, simply fill out our referral form, email us at WashingtonSigmaNu@gmail.com, or call Recruitment Chairman Brendan Kelly '24 at (425) 449-3551.
