8 Memory and Our Mystic Shrine Dr. Wayne L. Attwood '51 entered the Mystic Shrine on December 1, 2023. Wayne served in the military for three years before enrolling in KU Medical School. After finishing medical school, he, his wife Joy, and their family moved to Spokane, Wash. Wayne dedicated his life to caring for others during his 31- year career as a doctor of internal medicine at Sacred Heart Medical Center. In his community, Wayne served as the president for Physicians for Social Responsibility and worked with the Hanford Education Action League to shut down the nuclear testing sites at Hanford and expose the impact of secret releases of radiation. Wayne was an avid outdoorsman and took his family on many multi-day backpacking trips. His family was his biggest priority and proudest legacy. Gail L. Habluetzel '68 entered the Mystic Shrine on November 16, 2023. Gail met and married his wife, Marsha, while in college. After living in California and Texas, they moved to Clay Center, where Gail worked as a staff member for Big Lakes Developmental Center for 25 years, retiring in 2006 as BLDC's Clay Center services director. Gail served with Campus Crusade for Christ for many years, first as an editor of a Christian athletic magazine, and then with a touring singing group, which led to travel around the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Known for his love of music and singing voice, Gail sang for special programs, weddings, and funerals in his community. He also enjoyed being "Uncle Sam" for nine years during Clay Center's Fourth of July parades. Gail was heavily involved in the Evangelical Covenant Church and served in many roles in 4-H. Thomas W. Gray '77 entered the Mystic Shrine on July 18, 2023. Tom served his community as a trusted attorney for over 40 years. He loved sports; music; his friends; his wife of almost 46 years, Pam; his kids, Katy Martin, Andrew, Lauren Sotos, and Carolyn Huggins; and his 13 grandkids. Tom's kindness and love of life was contagious. Todd Hernández '95 entered the Mystic Shrine on April 23, 2023. After completing his undergraduate degree, Todd later pursued his doctorate in 2004 and began his career as an assistant professor of Spanish and applied linguistics at Marquette University. He was promoted to associate professor in 2011 and to a professor in 2019. Todd was an expert in language teaching methodology, was a member of the Finance Committee of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, and was a key participant in discussions on assessment and study abroad. Outside of work, he was an avid golfer and tennis player and loved to travel to Argentina and across the world with his family. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Paola Hernández, daughters Camila and Sofia, his parents, and his sister. A L U M N I U P D AT E S Alumni News Ed A. Freeburg '55 and his wife, Pat, moved into a retirement community in Highlands Ranch, Colo., two years ago. Daniels '74 continues to serve Jesus, help others to grow in Christ, and share His love with others. He referees and umpires children's football and baseball.
