Jay, David Gaumer '84, and Scott Mueller '84 were fantastic representatives of SigEp and great at selling the Fraternity. At recruitment events, Mark connected with other potential new members, and he appreciated that the Fraternity was made up of men from throughout the state. Though the Balanced Man concept was not yet a thing, Mark found there was a clear focus on academics, social involvement, and intramural sports. As a farm kid from Oakley, walking into a lecture hall with several hundred students was a big adjustment. "Being granted the opportunity of being a SigEp helped me transition from a senior class of 53 to the freedoms of being an adult." As a collegian, Mark had the opportunity to serve as recruitment chairman with Doug Scheibe '87, which was a rewarding experience. "I thought we pulled together a terrific pledge class that carried through the leadership of the house for a few years. That pledge class has been successful throughout their lives both personally and professionally." Mark also served as Fight Night chairman, and that year, Kansas Beta raised a record amount for the American Heart Association. "That experience taught me a lot about leadership and project management that carried forward to my professional career." Mark enjoyed an interesting and fulfilling career, which began in public accounting, mostly with KPMG for nearly seven years. Mark then worked in the controller's group at Mutual of Omaha for three years before moving to Koch Industries in Wichita, where he spent 19 years in controller, treasurer, and CFO positions within several business units. "The opportunities I enjoyed at Koch were second to none. Those experiences gave me the confidence to purchase Ferroloy, and a lot of the tools I use today have come from my experiences at Koch." Currently, Mark is the President and Owner of Ferroloy Inc., an iron foundry and machine shop in Wichita. "At least on most days, I love owning and operating my own business. We've successfully grown the business to this point and put in a lot of the processes and equipment needed to move forward. I'm probably most proud of the leadership team we have assembled and the company culture we have developed." Mark dated Marita throughout college, and they married after he graduated. They have two boys, Derek and Brett '16, both K-State graduates. Derek is a manager in the hospitality industry in Breckenridge and manages some real estate the family owns there. Brett runs Ferroloy's foundry operations. He and his wife Jill have three kids, Eden, Nellie, and Emmett. "I didn't know I would love it this much, but it is such a blessing to be a grandparent, and I love when they call me Pops," Mark shared. Mark and Marita enjoy spending time with friends, eating great food and drinking even better wine, and traveling. Over the last few years, they have been to Fiji, Iceland, Italy, and Canada. In the U.S., they enjoy time in the mountains and trips to Vegas and Santa Rosa Beach. They are also avid supporters of K-State sports, and K-State has continued to play a significant role in their lives. Mark and Marita have been trustees for the KSU Foundation for about 10 years. Marita served on the Hospitality Management Advisory Board for several years, and Mark served on the Finance Advisory Board. When Mark worked for Koch, he was the campus champion for K-State. Several years ago, the couple endowed an accounting scholarship to assist first-generation accounting majors who graduated high schools in Kansas or Nebraska to pay it forward to the next generation of K-Staters.
