Instead of the pulpit and microphone, Darren Rankins chose to share his love for people by doing the small things in a big way. Darren enjoys making a difference in his community in any way that he can. He comes from a family of ministers but said the pulpit was not for him. "I wanted to minister but not from a pulpit," Darren said. "I'm more of a teacher, and I was called to go out into the community. Since I was a child, I've always wanted to help others." e La Vergne, TN, resident buys and delivers water to the homeless shelters and veterans' homes in his area, collects tabs from aluminum cans for the Ronald McDonald House, donates custom-made shirts to non-profits, and volunteers. He also distributes food at local churches and donates his photography services to non-profits that are hosting events. For the past several years, Darren has been crisscrossing Rutherford County searching for cans, delivering water, and asking others to donate aluminum can tabs. He also regularly rummages through the trash for cans at convenience stores. "I have no [loss of] pride in doing that. I collect cans all year long and donate the tabs," he said. Darren grew up in Murfreesboro and attended Oakland High School, where he won a few tennis tournaments. He also attended MTSU before settling into full-time work. Lately, his health and expenses have taken a toll on his efforts to give back. He is suffering from the effects of diabetes and had to buy his first car in 30 years because his other one stopped working. "It's tough right now, but it's important for me to keep trying."
