Page 3 LEARNING BALANCE Filip DeHaven '25 Proud to Serve Through SigEp A s a first-generation college student from Salem, Virginia, Filip DeHaven '25 knew from a young age that he wanted to go to Virgina Tech. He also became the first Virginia Kappa member to win Homecoming King. "It was a surreal experience getting to share my story with the community and seeing them believe in me," he said. "Every single brother helped in various ways, whether through tabling, participating in the parade, or presenting to other organizations. This isn't a 'me' thing, it's a chapter endeavor—and I'm glad we were finally able to win it!" SigEp was the first recruitment stop where Filip felt like he could be himself and make lifelong friends. His year as vice president of programming taught him a plethora of time management and organizational skills to ensure both he and the chapter were operating at their best. He also helped establish Virgina Kappa's first parents' and alumni weekends at Oak Lane and introduced a new philanthropy event: How the SigEps Stole Christmas. This event tripled the funds they raised for Toys from the Heart. As IFC's vice president of health and safety, Filip introduced a Men's Health Week that impacted all 31 Virginia Tech fraternities. He is currently president of Order of Omega, the university's Greek life honor society. "These positions have allowed me to do good not just for my chapter, but the entire Greek life community. Younger brothers should get involved both within and outside SigEp— there is so much good we can do on campus and beyond!" After graduating next year, Filip plans to stay at Virginia Tech as a graduate student in business analytics; he hopes to enter a government contracting field later. Staying local will also help him support Virgina Kappa and the AVC as an alumnus. "Damn Proud to be a Virgina Kappa SigEp— it's the best decision I have ever made." You can reach Filip at filipdehaven@vt.edu. R ob Bennett '84 and Kathy met in February 2012, quickly becoming best friends and partners. Together, they built not only a house but a life filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams. Through thick and thin, they were a team, each supporting the other in every way imaginable. After Rob's diagnosis of Young Onset Alzheimer's, Kathy was there every step of the way. She ensured that he received the best care and gave him the love, comfort, and support he needed. Her devotion to Rob was unwavering, a testament to their deep bond. With their commitment of giving back to others, the choice to help endow the SigEp Learning Community Support Fund is a beautiful way to honor Rob and their shared legacy. Providing for Those Closest to Us Rob Bennett '84 Honored Through the SLC Support Fund Several SigEp alumni had a great time gathering to watch our football team defeat Boston College 42-21 on October 17, 2024. Hokies Take on Boston College Rob and Kathy.
