KAPPA DELTA | UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI PAGE 4 B L O S S O M I N G F R I E N D S H I P T his semester has been quite eventful for Kappa Delta. We started by having a record recruitment, welcoming 106 new members. All were initiated on September 30. In October, we celebrated being paired with Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, and Beta Sigma Psi for Homecoming at our Marriage Party. Though we didn't place this year, we had an amazing time. Additionally, nearly every member in our chapter voluntarily donated blood or found someone to donate in their place. The excitement for Homecoming and the desire to win did not go unnoticed, and we are thrilled to see what more we can do with this attitude come spring. Throughout this semester, we hosted our annual country-themed social hayride where members were welcome to bring a date, our Halloween social, and the Emerald Ball. We also held one of our biannual philanthropy events, Confidence Week. During this week, we hosted several booths outside our house and in Speaker's Circle, where we sold donuts and bagels to raise money for our philanthropies. To round out our fundraising, we sold late-night dinner tickets for Kappa Dillas. For $5 beforehand or $7 at the door, members of the Mizzou community could purchase quesadillas and chips and salsa. With the new house and prime location at 606, we brought in over 1,000 guests and sold even more tickets than that. We're so proud of everyone's hard work to make these events successful! Kelley didn't fully appreciate the impact Kappa Delta would have on her life until after college. "It truly became the common thread that wove together many of my lifelong friendships." She shares that she also wouldn't have met her husband if it hadn't been for her KD sisters. Knowing firsthand how the sisterhood can change lives, Kelley chose to support Inspiring Tradition: The Campaign for Epsilon Iota and the expansion of the house so it can have life-changing effects on even more young women for generations to come. Kelley coordinated a group gift in memory of a sister. "The passing of our dear friend and Kappa Delta sister Lynelle Scouby Luther '84 inspired us to raise funds to dedicate the study room, which was once our chapter room, in her honor. This initiative was a heartfelt experience, as we were motivated by the love and admiration so many had for Lynelle." "Almost 40 years ago, during recruitment at 606, we were discussing potential new members," Kelley recalled. "Our membership chairman said, 'Who met Lynelle Scouby/Scooby? Who met Scooby Doo?' Lynelle has been Scooby to us since that moment. Lynelle possessed a vibrant wit as quick as her smile and always an engaging tale to share. She was a cherished friend and is deeply missed daily by our expansive circle of friends. I believe this was where our friendship blossomed, and this abstract of women honors our friendship, illustrating how our connections have evolved and deepened, a testament to the power of love and shared experiences." Kelley created a wonderful piece of art that is now hanging in the study room named in honor of Lynelle. Kelley has always been creative, and during the pandemic, she began painting daily. Last year, she acquired studio space where she loves to spend time. "My paintings are personal; they are an attempt to decipher the babble in my brain, to put forward a less awkward self, to navigate through my everyday chaos towards calm," she shared. "Play and discovery are my constant companions in my studio. There are always challenges and discoveries in the creative process, and so often I find just as many small, sweet victories. My compositions are really about my own personal journey, and I hope to convey and create happiness." Kelley has been happily married to Powell Carman for 37 years. They have two adult children, Olivia and James. Kelley and Powell split their free time between St. Louis, Missouri, and a farm near Paris, Missouri. In her free time, Kelley enjoys traveling, cycling, backpacking, and hiking. You can connect with her at kelleycarmanart@gmail.com. Homecoming 2024.
