The 2024 inductees overcame challenges posed by the pandemic to achieve this honor, joining a legacy of distinguished members, including former U.S. presidents and Nobel Laureates. Congratulations to brother Jack Vigue '25 for being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa! PHI BETA KAPPA INDUCTS STUDENTS A large contingent of Xi alumni and undergraduates gathered at the Chapter House duirng Homecoming to honor Phil Calhoun '62 with the Bishop Herbert Welch Lifelong Leadership Award. Last awarded in 2019, the Welch Award is the Xi of Psi Upsilon's highest honor and recognizes lifelong leadership for Wesleyan and society. Highlights of Brother Calhoun's lifetime of leadership and service include: • Serving Wesleyan as a senior administrator between 1964-73, including as university secretary under President Colin Campbell. He also served as national chairman of the Wesleyan Alumni Fund between 1982-84. • Starting the varsity crew program at Wesleyan in 1964 and serving as first-ever head coach from 1964-73. Coach Calhoun led the Cardinals to the New England Championship in 1967, to many Little Three Championships, and to a national second-place finish at the illustrious Dad Vail Regatta. Coach Calhoun was inducted into the Wesleyan Athletic Hall of Fame on November 1, 2024, on the eve of Homecoming. • Serving the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in several senior executive branch positions; working for Franklin and Marshall University where he again founded and coached the crew program; managing his family's construction business; and serving since 2005 as executive director of the Ferree Foundation. Brother Calhoun was joined at the Welch Award ceremony by his wife, Janet, and his brother, Rob '72. Phil delivered inspirational remarks reflecting on his career and the outstanding leaders he was fortunate to work with and learn from, including Wesleyan President Colin Campbell and former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge. The award ceremony offered an opportunity for all in attendance to reflect not only on the accomplished life of Brother Calhoun but also the award's namesake, Bishop Herbert Welch 1887. When Bishop Welch died at age 106 in 1969, he had served the Methodist Church for 80 years and was the oldest prelate of any church in the world. He served many terms as a Wesleyan trustee between 1901 and 1959, while also serving the Methodist Church as Bishop of the Orient, Bishop of Pittsburgh, and president of Ohio Wesleyan University for 11 years. As an undergraduate at Wesleyan, Bishop Welch joined the Xi Chapter of Psi Upsilon his freshman year in 1883 and was its president as a senior in 1887. He majored in English literature, managed the football team (a team that traveled to Ann Arbor in November 1883 and defeated the University of Michigan 14-6), sang in a popular quartet, made Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated with the highest honors.
