PAGE 1 "THIS FRATERNITY WILL BE DIFFERENT." S igma Phi Epsilon arrived at the University of Missouri 13 years after it was founded at Richmond College in 1901, becoming the first SigEp chapter in the state. The chapter operated continuously for over 100 years, producing Balanced Men through personal growth, camaraderie, and lasting connections. Our heralded history does not end in Columbia, as MO Alpha takes great pride in winning three Buchanan Cups (1989, 2001, and 2023) and having three alumni (John Hartman '61, Denny Bond '65, and Paul Koontz '16) elected as Grand Chapter presidents. SigEp was founded with the belief, "This fraternity will be different." In 2016, we were not different. The decision was made by SigEp Headquarters, Mizzou, and the Alumni and Volunteer Corporation (AVC) to close the chapter following years of high-risk undergraduate behaviors that were growing worse by the semester. MO Alpha has since returned and is back to being different. We received Mizzou's 2024 Fraternity of the Year award and were selected by SigEp Headquarters as a pilot chapter for the Balanced Man Program 2.0. Our chapter now totals over 140 members after a fall 2024 class of 44 men, and we were first in academics with a 3.499 GPA during the fall 2024 semester. Our men have embraced an alcohol- and drug-free facility with zero tolerance for hazing and with a focus on personal development, academics, and brotherhood. MO Alpha is back to reflecting what we all take pride in. It's not been easy building a top-tier organization from scratch in five years. The AVC focused on helping these young men to grow and develop as SigEps, but to continue this progress, we must look toward our next challenge: financially securing 405 Kentucky Boulevard.
