Calas, Scholarship Recipien! C ollege life offers a unique blend of academic and social experiences for aspiring young men. Dan Lumma '86 found his ideal environment for growth at Missouri S&T through Kappa Sigma. The Brotherhood is now honoring Dan with his induction into the Beta-Chi Hall of Fame. BUILT BY BETA-CHI Dan has nothing but praise for the Beta-Chi Brothers he met while exploring Fraternity options, especially appreciating their commitment to both academics and activities. As a collegian, he valued the camaraderie developed through St. Pats, Greek Week, house events, and simply spending time with the brothers. "They were a great combination of good guys who liked to have fun while also having a level of intensity about school." During college, Dan served Beta-Chi as assistant treasurer, treasurer, and Grand Master. His fraternal service taught him leadership and discipline as he balanced Chapter responsibilities with his academic workload. "When I graduated and started working, I felt comfortable taking on more responsibilities because I knew I could handle it. I attribute this confidence to the combination of both the rigor of S&T and activities at the Chapter House." ENGINEERING EXCELLENCE Dan's career began in 1990 when he joined Bibb and Associates as a design engineer. Following Kiewit's acquisition of Bibb in 1998, Dan's strong work ethic led to increased responsibilities, culminating in his role in expanding Kiewit's engineering business. Dan became Kiewit Engineering Group's first division manager. Over the years, he has led the integration of 3,500 employees into the company, contributing to Kiewit's growth into one of the North America's largest construction and engineering organizations. "Our group now includes design and engineering staff serving the power, oil and gas, industrial and water, and infrastructure markets, as well as a workshare office in Mexico that supports all of these areas." Dan currently serves at president of the Kiewit Engineering Group. K APPA SIGMA CONNECTIONS From Beta-Chi bonds to friendships with college bandmates, Dan stays in regular contact with S&T alumni from his undergraduate years. He will host his first pledge Brother reunion this September, with at least a dozen alumni traveling from across the country to reconnect in Missouri. As a 2024 Beta-Chi Hall of Fame inductee, Dan is honored to be recognized alongside other esteemed alumni from one of Kappa Sigma's top Chapters. He has been chosen as the keynote speaker for the occasion and is excited to discuss Kappa Sigma's significant impact on his life. "I look forward to sharing how Kappa Sigma and Missouri S&T have shaped me both as a leader and an individual. I hope my message will resonate with and inspire the current Chapter members." Dan and his wife, Katie, have a blended family of six children who keep them busy. They often enjoy time at their place on Table Rock Lake. In his free time, Dan likes to play guitar and travel. You can connect with him at dhlumma@gmail.com. "Kappa Sigma definitely had an impact in shaping me as a leader and has contributed to getting me started in my career."
