Congratulations to Austin Parisi '23 on his IFC presidency! Page 3 I n his first semester of recruitment, Tim Zanaras '20 received bids from two fraternities. He declined both after careful thought, deciding he didn't feel a pull toward either one. Soon after, Tim was roommates with a DU brother who invited him to the Chapter House. "I immediately knew Delta Upsilon was where I wanted to be," he said. "The atmosphere and friendliness of the brotherhood turned a difficult decision into an easy one." DU taught Tim that fraternities could be much more than parties and popularity contests. Embracing leadership roles helped him develop, teaching him to speak to large groups and lead them toward specific goals. Tim's year as Chapter president resulted in two of his hardest yet most rewarding semesters at Penn State. "Given my large workload as an energy engineering student, I had to learn how to balance school and fraternity life." So far, that balance is paying off: Tim recently finished his third year at the construction management company SitelogIQ. There, Tim and his fellow engineers work mostly in school districts around Pennsylvania to provide better facilities for students. His proudest accomplishment to date is passing his FE exam, which grants him state recognition as an engineer-in-training. "It's a small step toward becoming an accomplished engineer, but one I'm proud of!" Tim loved his DU years so much that he joined the Alumni Board of Directors to help future brothers love their time as well. He's now in his second year-long term as vice president of undergraduate affairs, following a year as an undergraduate advisor to the Chapter. He looks forward to giving back as a board member for the foreseeable future. Today, Tim lives in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where he enjoys spending time outdoors with friends. He especially loves the fall season, when he can cheer for both the Eagles and Penn State football. In addition to his board work, Tim is in a fantasy football league with multiple brothers from his college years. "It's a great way to stay in touch with guys whose lives and jobs have taken them all across the country," he said. Connect with Tim at timzanaras@gmail.com. TIM'S ADVICE TO UNDERGRADUATES "People often talk about focusing on 'the light at the end of the tunnel.' This is usually during a difficult time when you just want to put your head down and focus on the goal. Someone once told me not to focus on the light so much that I trip over a track on the railway. In other words, not to be so focused on my end goals that I don't focus on the smaller, daily steps forward. I think this applies greatly as brothers apply for internships and prepare to join the workforce. It's OK to be excited about your major goals, but make sure you focus on what you can do today to make your goals happen." ALUMNI NEWS James J.
