2 BETA MU LINK H ailing from the small town of Rushville, Indiana, Terri Earnest '66 came to Purdue with an awareness of Beta eta Pi because of high school friends who joined at IU. Terri and freshman roommate Ed Harris '67 made the decision to join Beta Mu Chapter, and he continues to appreciate the fraternal foundation that prepared him for life beyond college. BROTHERHOOD AT THE CORE "I grew up later in life than most of my peers," Terri said. As a Beta Mu brother, he appreciated the chance to learn through trial and error while developing himself through Beta's values and principles. "I was learning all that time—relationships, integrity, responsibility for your actions, and the tremendous value of having a core group of brothers with similar interests." Beta eta Pi offered tremendous social opportunities, and Terri especially recalls riding the "Beta Hack" school bus to football games, serenades, and other events. ough life in Arizona makes it tough to stay in touch with Beta alumni in the Midwest, he'd enjoy reconnecting with brothers and sharing those undergraduate memories from the 1960s. LIFE BEYOND COLLEGE Aer graduating, Terri was unsure about his career path and decided to attend Navy OCS. Aerward, he returned to the Krannert School of Management to earn his M.S. in human resources. "My assignments during three years in the Navy, along with my Beta experience, are two of the most significant influences on my development." Terri expected to spend just a couple years working at Ford but went on to enjoy a 30-year career in HR management for the company. His three decades in Ford's HR department included three years working in Mexico in the mid-1980s. He and his wife, Cathy, retired to Arizona in the early 2000s. FOCUSING ON PHILANTHROPY Situated in a golf community near Tucson, Terri became a founder of a non-profit foundation to support children in need within the region. As of 2024, the community has donated more than $4 million to help Tucson children with their development to the point of finishing high school. "Being able to experience the importance of giving people a chance to be more than they ever anticipated is overwhelmingly satisfying." Terri recognized that the Beta brotherhood's support helped him realize his goals later in life, which is why he extended his philanthropic efforts by making an estate pledge to Beta Mu Chapter. "e pledge enables us to provide that same opportunity to other young men. As we all know, today's world is incredibly complicated and oen crazy. is makes providing principles to help guide our future leaders even more important." In their retirement, Terri and Cathy enjoy traveling with friends at Stone Canyon and sharing their Midwestern roots. Terri is also an avid golfer who currently takes things more social and less competitive. However, he reports his handicap is lower than that of Randy Ellspermann '68.
