Delta Upsilon, University of Missouri P.O. Box 442100 Lawrence, KS 66044-2100 Address Service Requested Duck call The T hree years ago, Mary Stice retired from her 27-year career as a high school business teacher. Typical retirement life was not for her, however, so she subbed for a bit until she was ready for a new adventure. Her son, Eric, suggested she consider a housemother position because he knew she would be a great asset to a fraternity. When the Mizzou Delta Chi house director suggested she apply for the position at Missouri Chapter, she did her research. Intrigued by Delta Upsilon's founding principles, service, and philanthropy, she agreed to a telephone interview. Her talk with Terry Brady '62 led to a second interview, followed by a house visit and an impressive lunch meeting with the officers and alumni. She later had another luncheon with six alumni. Impressed with the warmth and politeness of the Fraternity brothers and the kind reception of the alumni, Mary accepted the position. Every day has been different for Mary over the last year as housemother. In a "typical" day, she communicates with the alumni board and chapter officers, encourages brothers to participate in activities and complete their DU reports, checks the house for maintenance issues, retrieves mail, does email correspondences, orders supplies, supervises the cleaning and kitchen staff, and oversees security issues. Mary has enjoyed seeing the brothers grow and develop. Her goal is to continue to set a great example of kindness and build meaningful relationships with them. "The boys bring me joy!" Mary loves hearing about the brothers' days and seeing them take on leadership positions. "Both of my sons were in a fraternity, so I realize how fraternities can be life-changing, and it is my belief that DU is preparing our boys." Throughout Mary's time as housemother, she has experienced many wonderful moments, including attending the Fraternity and Sorority Life Honors Ceremony and seeing President Ryan Juengel '26 accept awards on behalf of the chapter. "It was a very proud moment because I know how extremely hard this DU group works." The "Building Better Men" leadership training was also meaningful and interesting for Mary to witness. To make the house even more fun and inviting, Mary has introduced a game night at the house, which the brothers have enjoyed. She decorates the house differently each month and enjoys seeing the members' reactions. "Just the little things you do, the boys notice." During Christmas, she introduced a decorating night where the members decorated Christmas cookies, the tree, and the living room. Mary feels fortunate to have the support of the advisory and house boards. "I could not do this job without their dedication and support." When she's not serving DU, Mary can be found meeting up with other house directors for dinner and game night, typically on Fridays. "I am so grateful for this friendship bond." She also enjoys attending Mizzou sporting and cultural events, exercising, reading, and playing cards. She has two sons and daughters- in-law and six grandsons. One of her sons lives in Lee's Summit, and Mary is happy to be closer to them and attend her grandson's activities. Could You Verify Something? We're Cleaning Up Our Database!
