ENTRE NOUS P i B e t a P h i a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f S o u t h e r n C a l i f o r n i a • F a l l 2 0 2 4 Happy fall! Summer was a busy season for California Gamma as we accomplished much very quickly. is was a summer of repairs and updates to our 50-year-old chapter house. Our amazing and dedicated contractor, Charlie Phillips, has overseen our home for eight years, maintaining top security equipment, and he is proactive regarding electrical wiring and HVAC maintenance. We also repaired and resealed rooftop decking and completed plumbing and roof maintenance and repair. During the past two years of record rain in Los Angeles, we came across areas in the house we had never dealt with since it was built in 1974. We reframed the ceiling in the music room and the right cover, both of which pooled water and never properly drained. This has been a problem since I lived in the house 38 years ago! We also replaced 14 windows and screens that were damaged by rain. We added a chair rail in the downstairs television room, finished all of the door moldings in the house, and installed crown molding in the guest bedroom. We painted the upstairs bedrooms and hallways, and updated plumbing (due to a pinhole leak) and electric wires. Finally, we installed new motion detector cameras and lighting on our property to keep residents safe. 667 W. 28th Street is in great condition thanks to everyone who generously supported these efforts! On a personal note, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of DCIS breast cancer in June. Thankfully, it was found at an early stage through a mammogram. I had surgery, began a five-year stint on Arimidex, and underwent radiation for a couple of weeks. Today, I am cancer-free! My decision to share my journey was a simple one; how could I not include breast cancer in my article to an audience of women during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month? I encourage you to get yearly mammograms and be an advocate for yourself! I had a gut feeling before my diagnosis, and had I not pushed for a biopsy from the radiologist, I would have experienced a different outcome. I am so grateful for my dear Kappa friend and 20-year survivor, Joy, who helped me navigate the Hoag Breast Cancer Center and all the outstanding doctors and surgeons. Thank you to the Pi Phi sisters who have shared their own incredible journeys of hope and inspiration as well. The support from my family and friends has been unimaginable, and I am blessed with love and encouragement. As we enter this new season, I hope you enjoy the change of weather, gain a renewed gratitude for life, and schedule a mammogram!
