PAYING IT FORWARD E l l i e H o b e l m a n H a r r i s ' 1 6 H a s a H e a r t f o r S e r v i c e I joined Gamma Phi Beta because I hoped to surround myself with genuine, long-lasting female friendships. During recruitment, I could tell the members of Gamma Phi cared for the women around them and were passionate about their sisterhood. Once I joined the chapter, I quickly realized the members also pushed each other to grow into strong women of character. I was constantly challenged by my peers, pushed to take leadership positions in the chapter and on campus, and encouraged to pursue my dreams. During my freshman year, my brother and sister-in-law lived in Charleston, South Carolina. I asked my entire pledge class if anyone wanted to join me for spring break, and to my surprise, three women jumped on a plane to spend a week with my family! Even though they now live in other states, are in different career fields, and experience entirely different things, I will cherish that time with them and the friendship that grew from that trip. Today, my memories with Pi sisters continue to develop as we attend each other's weddings, celebrate recent accomplishments, or run into each other at the grocery stores and coffee shops. I think the beauty of our sisterhood is those opportunities to make new connections and memories don't stop just because our time at UNL comes to an end. I earned a bachelor's degree in criminology and criminal justice with minors in history and business and pursued a career in law after college. I started law school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in fall 2020, and although the pandemic made it even tougher than usual, my Pi sisters encouraged me to continue despite the uncertainties and supported me throughout. I wouldn't have made it through my first year without the pledge class of 2016. I have served as Pi Chapter's recruitment advisor since August 2020. I certainly would not be the woman I am today without my time in the chapter, and I know it's the support of alumnae that allows more women to have the same experience I did. I have enjoyed staying connected and meeting the women who form Pi's next generation. This year, I am excited to continue to find opportunities to volunteer with Pi Chapter and to watch the current members thrive during the upcoming recruitment season! Ellie lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, where she works in the county attorney's office as a deputy county attorney for Lancaster County in the juvenile division. She married Jeff Harris last August, just a month after taking the bar exam. Jeff works as the director of account operations at Opendorse. They have a wheaten terrier poodle mix named Rory, and in their spare time, they enjoy lots of walks, playing tennis, pickleball, and golf as well as traveling and seeing friends and family. If you'd like to connect with Ellie, email her at ellie.hobelman@gmail.com. ANYONE CAN VOLUNTEER! I encourage all alumnae to get involved if life allows it! Giving back has been such a rewarding experience. Pi Chapter continues to give as much to me as I give it, and I want that experience for every member as well as their daughters and their daughters' daughters. Our alumnae's support and involvement permit this beautiful organization to continue to grow and make an impact!
