RUTGERS UNIVERSITY FALL 2024 The Raritanian Becoming a SigEp Learning Community and Progressing Toward Charter ON OUR WAY Building Brotherhood I was lucky enough to be a facilitator at the SigEp Ruck Leadership Institute in Richmond this year. This intensive leadership training experience features a mix of classroom work, a ropes course, a Frisbee tournament, an awards dinner, and a risk management presentation. There were eight groups of 20 undergraduates, and each had two or three alumni facilitators. The days began at 8 a.m. and ended at 10 p.m. Yes, I had to sleep like an undergraduate in a dorm room with a paper- thin mattress. (At least we got singles!) I facilitated with Shawn Cable, Baylor '17, who previously worked as an expansion director, and with Jay Hurt, Davidson '88 (OGH), who was one of the founders/creators of the institute along with John Hartman, Missouri '61 (OGH). Michael Cross '23 was also present and had the unenviable job of Frisbee referee—he did great! B rothers and friends, I hope everyone had a great summer. As we have begun the fall 2024 semester, I would like to thank all our alumni and friends who made a donation this past year. The AVC raised about $24,000. In addition, I would like to thank ALL our volunteers who spent many hours of their time helping with either alumni or undergraduate operations. Our fraternity would not be able to survive without the many donations of time and money. Thank you! As an AVC, we have a conservative outlook with our finances but also need to increase our budget to provide more financial support to the undergraduates. The undergraduate chapter must be supported financially as they build their chapter size without having years of accrued resources and a huge manpower. This year, the undergraduates are looking forward to becoming a SigEp Learning Community (SLC) chapter and obtaining a new charter. The goals are high as we begin the fourth year of reopening the chapter. When the undergraduates become an SLC chapter, their insurance bill will be drastically reduced. This will add a great deal of resources back into their budget for other items such as recruitment and social programming. With Conclave on the horizon this coming August (2025), the chapter has a great chance to become fully CHARTERED! Both of those will make recruitment and everyday operations a whole lot easier. A lot of work needs to be done to attain SLC and the charter, but the undergraduates are led by a great team of leaders and rising stars. Recruitment is their top priority this year on campus. This past year they saw nice size growth from a 30-brother chapter to approximately 40 brothers. This year, they are looking for a 20-man increase. With all the guidance from HQ and the AVC, they hope they attain this goal. Our undergraduates are also working hard in the areas of academics and philanthropy. We hope to see many of you at any one of our upcoming alumni events. Please keep following us on social media to find out when our next events are.
