Choose the wrong men in a single year, or God forbid wrong men in back-to-back years, and the Chapter could chart a path to its speedy demise. Thankfully, during our 109-year history we have had only a few challenging recruitment periods. Typically, the Chapter selects two Fraters who "chair" the recruitment process over the summer while two other Fraters chair "informal" recruitment during the school year. The challenge is always to find potential members who bring stability and growth to the Chapter while also delivering a strong pool of Chapter and academic leaders who support brotherhood for all. Spike was often quoted as saying, "Bring Epsilon only those men who have awoken from the slumber of mediocrity and whose sense of idealism has been stirred." Epsilon Chapter has always prided itself on its diverse membership by major and hometown, including political and economic diversity and skills. While many ISU fraternities seem to find men who are similar in major, thinking, and interests, Epsilon has prided itself on widely diverse members. There are uncountable and fun stories about how recruitment chairmen met potential recruits, how we landed a future Prytanis, or how we missed a member who later became a president of another fraternity. Jeff Conley '76 E-1219 and Kirk Weber '75 E-1190 traveled 12,000 miles in the summer of 1977 and landed 34 solid men, one who later became Prytanis (Bruce Stewart-Brown, DVM '77 E-1264). Tom Synhorst '76 E-1244 and Larry Beals '76 E-1230 worked hard at landing future Prytanis Brad Williams '78 E-1287 in the summer of 1978, but Brad showed little interest until Daughter of Diana members showed up for a summer recruitment party in swimsuits; Brad instantly signed his bid card! In the summer of 1974, Will Walling '72 E-1105 and Greg Garvin '72 E-1099 teamed up and landed a solid 35 pledges, all while camping out in free or low-budget campgrounds! Will's Ford Fairlane powered through the summer even though it had a faulty air conditioner. Chuck Kolbe '60 E-691 served as recruitment chairman from 1962-63 and quarterbacked 12 volunteer Fraters across three states for a period of two weeks, signing over 30 quality men. These are only a few of the more famous and talked-about recruitment stories. There are many more. Yours in the Bond, Roger C.
