DELTA PSI CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY AT RPI FALL 2024 I 'm delighted to share the news that Delta Psi's very own Chuck Maggelet has been named a Significant Sig. Congratulations Chuck! Chuck showed up at the chapter house in the fall of 1982, a fresh-faced pledge from Silver Springs, MD, with an Air Force ROTC uniform, a smile on his face, and dream to become a Sigma Chi. From that humble beginning, he blazed a trail through RPI and beyond, culminating in this most recent and well-deserved accolade. To paraphrase David Byrne of the Talking Heads, "Well, how did he get there?" Let's unpack this using the yardstick against which all Sigs are measured, The Jordan Standard. Let's see, per the Jordan Standard Chuck is supposed to be: A Man of Good Character: Chuck is indeed of good character, though back then some would have described him simply as "a character." Which he is. But make no mistake he is as good as they come. It was clear even then that Chuck had a rock-solid moral compass. In recent years Chuck has been instrumental in donating millions of dollars to help alleviate food insecurity and provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged families throughout the Mountain West, where he makes his home in Salt Lake City. A Student of Fair Ability: Check. Chuck graduated with an EE degree. Although to be honest Chuck, the word "Fair" is doing some heavy lifting here. ;-) Maybe the GPA would have been a tad higher had Chuck not maintained a nightly ritual along with Steve Rosato '85 of ordering Domino's pizza at midnight then watching Late Night with David Letterman until after 1 a.m. On the other hand, perhaps during all that late-night viewing Chuck absorbed some mysterious je ne sais quoi from Significant Sig David Letterman, Ball State '69, which helped him soar to such high heights. There are many roads to success, and inspiration is sometimes found in the unlikeliest of places. With Ambitious Purposes: Check Plus! From his start in AF ROTC to becoming a GM Scholar, all the while deeply engaged in the chapter's social life, IFC sports, and serving as Pro Consul while an upperclassman. After RPI, Chuck attended Harvard Business School and then embarked on a long career of multiple business successes. No shortage of ambition here, brothers. A Congenial Disposition: Double Check Plus. Anyone who knows Chuck would describe him as one of the most unfailingly upbeat, unflappable, and all-around nicest people they've ever met. As true today as it was in 1982. And finally... Good Morals, High Sense of Honor, and Deep Sense of Personal Responsibility. Yes, yes, and yes. (See above.) And so there you have it. If anyone deserves the moniker of Significant Sig, it is Chuck. Just recently, Chuck retired as CEO of Maverik, an 800- plus chain of convenience stores headquartered in Salt Lake City. Under Chuck's leadership Maverik more than doubled its store count and sales. In fact, Chuck has graciously decreed that any Delta Psi can walk into a Maverik store and be given a free fill up, hot dog, and Slurpee. (Just kidding, that isn't true. Please don't try it; you'll likely be arrested.) So here's to Chuck. Very proud to call him a brother and dear friend. While recently retired from his CEO position at Maverik, I'm quite sure he's not done. Can't wait to see what he does next!
