BETA RAYS A PUBLICATION OF BETA SIGMA PSI AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY SUMMER 2024 InsIde: BROTHERS FOR LIFE 2 ALUMNI UPDATES 3 LAKESIDE BROTHERHOOD 3 BIGGER AND BETTER 3 With a new granite top, the basement bar is ready for another year of fun and fellowship in the Chapter House. Getting Stuff Done! We're pleased to share that two main projects were recently completed. • First, the basement bar top was replaced with a beautiful piece of black granite. The old top was severely water- damaged in the flooding event over a year ago. This project was a joint effort between on-campus Brothers, who pitched in and reframed the base of the bar to make it ready for the bar top installation, and a few alumni. While none of us had experience with setting a granite countertop, we proceeded anyway in true "per aspera ad astra" fashion. Our DIY efforts saved $2,000, and you can see the results in the after photo to the right. • Second, a new water heater was installed after we received several quotes. The old one had developed a leak that worsened rapidly over time. Thanks goes to 2nd VP Cayden Faley '22 for his perseverance as he vacuumed nearly 50 gallons of water daily from the basement floor just before the new unit was installed. Come and Knock on Our (New) Front Door The house needs a new front door. Estimates have been solicited from contractors, and the installation will be completed after bids are evaluated. What's Next for the House? We plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Beta Chapter with an additional significant house renovation, which will complete work that remained after the recent Vision Ad Astra campaign. Thanks again to all those who helped with that campaign! When considering possible projects, the board overwhelmingly identified the most pressing need to be a refresh/remodel of the kitchen and dining room. These are the most used rooms in the Fraternity house and are one of the first areas visitors see. A committee of undergraduates, alumni, and our house Chef, Dan Highsmith, met on a biweekly basis over the last several months to discuss possible kitchen layouts, flooring and ceiling modifications, and related structural work that may be necessary. The committee's goal was to develop the high-level details for the project's scope. With this phase completed, the next step is to engage an engineer/architect to develop drawings and prepare a bid package that will provide project cost estimates. Thanks to John Nichols '81, Mike Schaefer '80, Dan Kramer '78, Bruce Senter III '21, Matt Millies '21, Cayden Fayley '22, and Chef Dan for all their time and effort on the committee. We can't wait to let you know more about this project as we settle on details!
