o finer a late October day could be recalled by those present for
the 2023 Samuel EELLS Memorial Golf Tournament. Alumni,
undergraduates, and parents played hooky on the Friday before
Homecoming and were rewarded for their waywardness as they
approached the first tee box accompanied by a traditional bagpipe
chorus, expertly droned by one of the undergraduates.
The autumn leaves littered the tumbling rough of Jackson Park
like (most of) the tee shots from this august and optimistic crowd.
The crisp, scented air and steady doses from the fading remnants
of the summer sun warmed the tees and balls as much as the
camaraderie and competition warmed our fraternal bones and
spirits. The accolades of the evening were fleeting compared to the
bonds strengthened and the memories shared. It was a fine, fair, and
fraternal start to a fabulous fall football weekend!
